411 Hawk. No, I haven't taken any game with it yet. It's been in the field a few times for bear protection, but not hunting. Planning on changing that as soon as possible, though. Started life as one of the new model Miroku's in 270 Win. Bought for the conversion (little did I know they would bring out the 405 about 1.5 years later...). The idea was for a short, quick handling rifle for packing while working along the coast and for deer and moose hunting in big bear country. While its been carried quite a bit for work, I've missed moose and deer hunts in the past 2 years since it was delivered. Have made the sheep hunts (wouldn't carry it as a sheep rifle) and my first trip to Zimbabwe (didn't take to Africa, either).

After back surgery is over, I'll see if I can't find a nice brownie for it.

The 411 Hawk is a very good cartridge for the 1895. It handles heavier than 300 grain bullets better than the 405.

I plan on loading 300gr North fork bullets for BIG big game in my 405.

I do not know why many have written the 1895 is ungainly, ill ballanced, and in the case of the 405 recoils painfully.

After shooting Mikes 405 @ 50 times I think it is the slickest lever rifle of all.
The more I handle mine here at the house the more I like it.
It fits me almost perfect. I added a Galco slip on leather recoil pad [the small size fits just right], which lenghtened the LOP just enough to fit me perfect.

Yes the lever throw is a little longer tham other levers, especially the BLR and the Savage with their short cartridges, but it is very smooth.
The trigger on mine is almost too light and it breaks like a glass rod.

I think my wife may have to have one of the new 30-06 Carbines.


So again my vote for the best lever gun ever is the 1895 Winchester, John Brownings last lever design.

I find your post amusing as the BLR is without doubt the best modern lever gun EVER made. Its better than a 88 because its lighter and has a better trigger. Its better than a 99 because it locks up in front instead of in the rear of the bolt(not a strong design). Has a detachable box mag and an exposed hammer. Better than a 86/71 because it can take spitzer bullets is true side ejection and is tapped for scope mounts. So in essence i dont see how the BLR doesnt even come close, as it blows away the competition, and is by far the strongest action made in a lever gun.

I have had several `86(they are good), 1894`s 1892´s which are all fine.....but the best ever
is the 1895..IMHO. That`s the only leveraction I have left and will never part with!.

My pick is the BLR because it is the most modern and can shoot the heavy magnums all with spitzer bullets. Scope is easy to mount, true side ejection, detachable box mag, 60 degree throw lever, rotating bolt that locks up in the front,folding hammer safety, very good fit and finish.

I'd have to pick up a used one, because I don't like the current production aluminum receivers.
