SusquashSavage 99 in 308 Value?
My son in Alaska just picked up a Savage 99 in 308 caliber that looks like it just came from the factory. Anyone have an idea as to what it is worth? Thanks for the info.

N. GarrettThe value hinges on when was made, and the configuration of the rifle.
Can you tell us a bit about it?
What is the serial number? (You can omit the last 3 digits of the serial number like this:
951xxx)
The serial number helps so that the rifle can be dated. The earliest 308's are the most valuable. The last models manufactured, not so much.

kondorMODEL 99A RECENT PRODUCTION
- similar to original, with .243 Win., .250 Sav., .300 Sav., .308 Win., or .375 Win. (1981 only, approx. 1,500 mfg.) cal., 20 or 22 in. barrel, tang safety, conventional butt. Mfg. 1971-81.
Grading 100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%
$475 $425 $360 $325 $300 $275 $250
Add 10% for .375 Win. or .250 Sav. cal.
You might contact Savage to determine the specific date but it likely is "recent" as in this category. That it is 71 rather than 81 likely means that the machine tools were not yet totally worn out, which was a problem at the end of production of the 99. So, your son's rifle is a good one and should give many years of service, irrespective of its "value".

AtkinsonI have collected Savages off and on, for some years now. The 99A of that era would be of little value to most collectors, but in unfired condition they all bring good bucks, but this gun seems to be rated excellent, unless it has hang tags, and box, in which case I personally would put it at $600 at the very top end of excellent. Hang tags and box in new condition would put it at $1000 or better, it would be worth whatever someone would pay for it and how bad they wanted, needed it for a collection.
