A buddy just bought a 450 alaskan on a Browning 71 action.
I have some 450 swifts I use in a 458 WM and was looking to load them in the 450 Alaskan. Any loading data out there for this projectile in the 450 Alaskan cartridge?

Big Bore rifles and cartridges by Wolfe Publishing (1991) has a chapter on the 450 alaskan.
the book lists loads for the 465 A-square at

IMR 30-31 start 61.5 at 1894fps (37,000 psi)
to 65.8 at 2033fps (42,180psi)
page 289

How "pointy" are those Swifts??

They are a protected point. Would lay flat against the primer

I have a 450GNR custom lever gun and it is just a tad more powerful than the 450 Alaskan and data for a 450gr bullet is 57.5gr of IMR-3031 for 2000fps in an 18" barrel. I shoot mostly 405gr Remington soft points as that is plenty for most anything. This bullet is under-estimated in ability to do damage and penetrate. Easier on the bones too.

After having bought a new Browning 71, and having it re-barreled to 450 Alaskan, and having re-loaded for it, my only piece of advice is....STAY AWAY FROM SQUIB LOADS!!!!

Using loading guides from various sources, I tried loading light loads for the gun.

These weren't home brew.

If you have ever had misfires (primer struck and nothing happening) or worse hangfires( hammer dropped, momentary pause and then bang), it makes you realize this could get ugly.

As to the potential for the Alaskan, I was getting honest (chrongraphed) loads of 2150 with 400 grain slugs.

Don't ask me for load data as I don't give out data due to the liability nonsense.

Anyway, I sold the 71 and wish I hadn't.
