My newest find winchester
My good friend Ridge Marriott sold me one of his many win mod 71s in .348 ackley Imp..Old Ackley has high praise for the caliber and how efficient it is. In effect a lever action 35 Whelan, which figures as the std 348 is a 30-06 in lever long johns...and to think about 3 months ago I sold all my Kodiak 250 gr. bullets! faint

that said, I;ll load this ole girl up and use it on my yearly cow in the alfalfa patch..and if I draw in the fabled South Hills of Idaho I will be looking for that 400 plus bull, Ive seen twice now in the field AFTER hunting season..Its the best elk hunt going today IMO. It fetched me a 393 bull some years ago..and they get a 40 or near 40 buck or two every year..

Ray,
Let us know how your M71 performs.

I have only shot one twice at a friends farm.
I had just completed practice with my 1895 .405 and was offered a chance to shoot the 71. It felt light out front and when fired, the barrel rise was not to my liking, so I prefer my 1895 .405.
Never shot another M71. To each his own.

Ray, are you in need of some 35 cal. bullets? I might still have some here after selling my 350 R.M. Hell, I know I do as I still load for my preachers 35 Whelen. Let me know if you need some.

Ive always liked the win mod. 71 it suits me fine in every respect, and Im quite fond of my mod 95 Marlin 45-70..I only hunt with either on ocassions. mostly I do my hunting with "ole lucky", a worn to death pre 64 mod 70 FWT in 30-06 had for 50 plus years I figure, give or take whatever..loaded with 200 gr. Accubonds or partitions at 2600 fps plus a bit. and never fails...I do plan on shooting a cow elk with the 348 or 45-70 this coming year..Has anyone noticed the resemblance between those 348 specs and the 30-06?? A 200 gr. bullet at 2600 fps in the 348 and 2700 with the 30-06 and in a 22" barrel in the 06, I suspect its a push..only advantage is the 06 shoots flatter and the 348 has a larger cross section of bore, neither of which count for much in the field..

Hmmmmmmmm??????

I hate when I do that homer

Let me know if you find a good source of .348 bullets..I am getting my stash together for when I finally own one.

I have always wanted a 71, the one Winchester lever I don't own. I make due with 1886's at this point. But, I like the pistol grip.

Buglementoday,
Hawk bullets can be had and they are good bullets in any of the old winchesters..I recently go 4 boxes of 220 gr. sps...If he is out he will take your name and tel. number and call when he makes a run...He will do what he says..good guy.
