Bill73,
This is a very late response to your question. The Rifle Magazine's - Special Edition titled The Legacy of Lever Guns dated Winter 2000 has an interesting article by Dave Scovill about the Winchester Model 71. He discusses the .348;.348 Improved Ackley; 450 Alaskan/.450-348 Ackley Improved; .416-348 Ackley Improved; .50 Alaskan; .375 Alaskan.

The first 71 James Watts made up (other than the .450 Alaskan) was his .40-348, but the bullet diameter was .411"

Im pretty hardened to recoil, but the 71 is not famous for absorbing recoil, and the ones I have shot determined the reason I have never hunted with one 458 caliber...just a mention for what its worth.

For the NA continent the mod. 71 .348 with proper bullets is suitable for any animal including the biggest of bears IMO, and a beautifully made firearm..I love the Win. 71 and 86.

Bill.
You'll enjoy it, I have the rifle mentioned in the Wolfe's magazine and in "Big Bore Rifles". All the work was done by Ackinson on the same rifle, 4 different barrels and calibers. I've had it for at least 15 years in .416/.348 improved and taken lots of big game with it, including several grizzlies.

Thanks for posting,My rifle is nearing completion at SSK industries, the dies are ready as well,in my mind this gun should be a sweet shooter @ 9 lbs, with the right bullets it should do all that I ask of it.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
