Why a Turnbull?

cal pappasWhy a Turnbull?
Buckeye:
Very nice indeed! I'm impressed. Thanks for the pics and PM.
ISS:
This is one of the many ways in which we differ. If I wanted a .50-110 with a 30 inch barrel I would search until I found an original. But that is just me. As for the value and not taking them to the field. Again, my friend, we differ. My finest doubles continue to be used in Africa, Australia, and Alaska each year. The value I'm sure has diminished a bit, but the play value far exceeds any small financial loss. Again, that's just me.
Cheers, gents.
Cal

Doug TurnbullWho wants to go to Newfoundland the end of May black bear hunting with their Turnbull, or any other lever action rifle with me, doing an article on it? Two Bear limit!
Hunt the 27th to the 31 May
Doug
I tend to use more than enough gun.

Idaho SharpshooterThe UPS man brought my 50-110 this afternoon.
It is even prettier than I had hoped.
In addition to the receiver, they color case hardened the nose cap, butt plate, and grip cap.
Wow! is all I can say.

cal pappasWell, ISS, damn it, how about sharing a few photos! The .50-110 is my favorite of the single barrel calibers (although I've seen one hammer English double so chambered).
Congratulations.

Idaho SharpshooterYer killin' me Snowman!
I hope to have several posted tomorrow early afternoon. It came out very nice, the contrast of the forend cap, checkered butt plate, and the rust bluing against the color case colors of the receiver is just sweet.
I have to bribe my photo buddy; looks like we are going to the big city for chicken at Popeyes.

My dad is owning the same revolver. Very accurate and very smooth action. This, and a his original M1911A1, were the first handguns I was shooting as young boy.
And very nice Turnbull M86. I love the M86 action. This is a "rifle".

I believe the beautiful rifle in question is a M71. The ´86 rifle doesn´t have a profound(radius) pistolgrip. The ´86 has a semi pistol grip, and the lever just barely bends along with the contour of the barely arched grip.

Big Bore FanYes, you´re right, it must be a M71 action. The M86 pistol grip and lever have a flatter design.
I love the M71 rifles too, very smooth action, but this rifles are very rare in Germany. I know only two shooter owning such a rifle. Befor a few years, I was reloading some .348WCF rounds for a friend.
Great round, but I´m a .45-Fan. A M71 for the .450/348 Ackley would be fine.

AtkinsonI agree that my tastes lean towards the originals in double rifles and old Winchesters, but I have owned more than a few Searcys and restored winchesters over the years..There is a place for both IMO...I would be extremely happy to have a Turnbull big bore lever gun to hunt and travel with because it can be replaced when lost, fixed when damaged without much ado, or I don't have to be constantly worried about something as simple as a scratch, whereas a mint collector of either is best kept as a closet Queen, for show and blow and rightly so!

they are far and few between.

Idaho SharpshooterYou are correct, it was once the nastiest, butchered M71 I had ever seen.
My local guy here rebarreled and and restocked it. It had some feeding issues, which Doug corected, and casehardened.

.366torqueRich! Wow!!! Doug is first rate. Like I was mentioning earlier, dealing with Turnbull is like it was in the grand ol days. You get what you want. No searching or making compromises.
It's simply "Doug I'd like a 45-90 with a top octogan bottom round barrel and finish it off at 19 1/2 inches. Model 71 pistol grip, etc, etc." Doug brought the fun and magic of lever guns.
His slogan should have zero compromises in it somewhere.
Dave Scoville brained an elephant and found the slug on the other side. Fast successive follow up shots and great firepower. Me thinks my normal caffeine intake has been far exceeded.
Anyways, Rich fantastic rifle!
