Word is that the idea was dropped after it was advertised. .480 is not listed in current on-line catalog.

Over on the marlin board, they're saying marlin will have it this year.

The .500 S&W strikes me as another great caliber for carbine application.

Anyone hear anything about Marlin or Winchester cooking up such a beast? Rossi?

EDITED TO ADD....

Oops! I hadn't seen the 500 levergun thread before I wrote this. Nevermind....

This chambering in the 94 was indeed shelved for some reason. I was going to get one too but they never made it to market. The newly announced Marlin will be in .475 Linebaugh and will also handle .480 so it sounds like a better deal anyway. One of those I WILL have!

475 Linebaugh sounds good problem is what kind of nose profile will it handle ie: WFN-WLN-LFN cast bullets or only Jacketed bullets, Sean

In the early days of the .454 Casull, a number of M 92 Winchesters were converted to shoot it. The main problem that surfaced was not excessive backthrust, but bulged chambers due to excessive pressures for normal barrel steel. When the barrels were replaced with ones made of tougher steel, this problem disappeared. It seems likely that putting an even larger diameter case in what is already a marginal barrel/receiver diameter combination, which would happen it you tried to use a .480", or worse, a .500" case, in the M94 would be very chancy!

But it might work O.K. in a Marlin 336-size action.
