My wife inherited a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem from her father. It has the plastic finish on the stock and going from memory pressed checkering. Might be wrong about the checkering and too lazy to open the safe.<BR><BR>For her birthday this summer I was going to put some pretty wood on it. Planning ahead I feel the 336 should have smooth wood no checkering. <BR>Sure don't need it for recoil. Careful..... That link is for a stock for the model 1897 Century Limited. That's Marlin's .22LR levergun and the forend is cut for an octagonal barrel.

The stock will fit a 336. I put one on mine.

She may prefer it left like her father left it. My dad left an old Win mod 12 that has no bluing left on it and an ugly polly choke. Restored it may look purty, but just wouldn't be his gun.

Been there done that. Well not actually a rifle but changed something without first checking. Nope her dad would never take here shooting. So there is no history other than it was her dad's. She had never even seen it until her mother gave it too her. She is all for nicer wood. Plus the factory will simply be set aside. I'd wrap it and use it as a pattern in my duplicator.

While that Sarco wood ikesdad posted looks nice and the price is right I'm having trouble getting my arms around it fitting. BUT this is really the first and only 336 I've had any extensive time with. Always had Winchesters when I had a lever. (Not counting my 22 BLR)

Sorry for the bad news,

You need to checker the rifle. Women need to see effect out of their man. She wont see value in being your hunting partner if you don't make her a pretty rifle.

Besides, smooth rifles are slippery when wet or covered with frost.

you can use a stock from the 336, 1895 or 1894, they are all interchangeable with a bit of fitting. Just make positive you get a straight stock for straight grip or curved stock for curved grip.
I like mine smooth, because I can steam out and repair hunting damage if it occurs. If the checkering gets messed up, I have to get some one else to fix it as I'm not good in the checking area.

What about the 1897 like Ikesdad.
I'm just having trouble getting my arms around a 22 stock fitting.

If they fit and were close to the pictures I might not jack with cutting a new set.

I know for a FACT this rifle will never be hunted with. If it comes out of the safe it would be to plink or let my step son shoot his grand fathers rifle.

As to effort. All of her hunting rifles are made by me. She points out the first thing I built her was her 7x57. Plus I'm now in the laundry room building cabinets around her as she does the laundry.

It fit my 336 with no mods. I got the tip from the guys over at marlinowners forums.
I suggest you get it straight from them.

Without any alteration? What about using the 1897 Century Ltd forend on a 336SC (forend with a cap vs barrel band)?

Yes, the butt fit. I used another forearm that I had checkered and also put an octagan barrel on.

This was 2 - 3 years ago.
