200-300 yrd 22LR
So I do squirrel depredation on a ranch. Rancher has restricted us to 22 Long Rifle only. Livestock, houses, etc. Sadly putting down the 22-250, and picking up my 10/22 and now a Remington 513T 27 inch bull barrel and a Redfield 8x scope.

I have hits with my 10/22 at 100 easy. 200 gets tough, and none at 300. I am moving to the Remington.

So, is the Hyper velocity 30'ish grain slugs better at range or 40 grain high velocity?

Did the landowner restrict you to .22LR specifically, or simply rimfires? If the latter, the .17HMR is a much better round for 100-150yd. shots.

I cannot think of a rimfire extant that will kill reliably at 300yds.

You'd be better off moving closer.

22LR only due to range restrictions. I do scoot up, but at ranges past 100yards then, does the hyper velocity small bullet do better than the 40 grain high velocity?????

In my experience, much of the high velocity .22 ammo never shoots very well much beyond 100 yd. I've not tried the hyper velocity stuff, but I'd bet it's even worse at long range, and the wind sensitivity is probably off the chart.

Of the high velocity stuff, I'd try the Federal and Winchester premium stuff to see how it works in your rifle.

You might also try Federal Auto Match, which starts at 1200 fps and shoots well out to 200 m in some of my rifles.

You might try the opposite tack and try a good grade of standard velocity stuff, like Wolf Target Rifle or SK Std. Plus. The trajectory is higher, but it is less affected by the wind because it starts just below sonic velocity.

A good range finder is probably necessary for any .22 at much over 100 yd. With a good trajectory chart and a range finder, you could turn your hunting into a tactical contest.

Those with the most hits at 200 m on the rams used for .22 BR silhouette use standard velocity ammo and the "good stuff" such as Lapua Center X, RWS rifle match or R100, Eley Black Box, etc. Just my experience. A nice 24X or larger (30-36X) scope helps also as well as a good action: Win 52, Rem 40X, Annie 54. It's tough to hold even MOA at that distance with ANY wind.

I had not considered the Standard Velocity ammo....good points.

in a lead sled I was able to shoot 0.25 inch 25 yard groups with the old girl. Seems the barrel is still in good shape.
