I recently purchased (legally) a 1/2-28 .22 cal suppressor with a Walther P22 atached to it. I want to build a .22 rifle to attach the suppressor. I read on another site that 10/22 (which was my first choice) was not very good for a detachable suppressor. They said it was not a "silent" rifle. Should I go with a bolt action? Which one has the most options (triggers, stocks, barrels)? Does anyone know a good gunsmith to turn the barrel end to 1/2-28?

Look up Johnathon Ceiner(Titusville, FL.), Information or perhaps a Google search. Last I saw he was working with 10/22's and Browning Autos. I don't think he makes detachable mufflers, all I saw were full length integeral installations. Whoever told you the 10/22 with a silencer isn't quiet probably hasn't shot one of the Ceiner rifle. You hear the action cycle and that's about it if you use standard velocity ammo. I think he does bolt guns too, not sure though.

use a bolt action or the like. The action operation on an auto adds to the total noise. This is why the british used a bronze bolt and fired the silenced sten guns on semi auto only.

The only problem with the 10/22 is it generates a lot of action noise. If you're looking for something cheap to thread for a suppressor, get one of those Romanian trainers for $100 or less.

I think the 10/22 is probably the best semiautomatic host rifle for an integral suppressor (I have an LRM Vidar), but a bolt gun will always be more quiet.

For a rifle to supress, why not look at a New England Firearms single-shot. They are nice little guns for the money. Accurate, handy, and you can get extra barrels in 22WMR and 17HMR. It would be easy for a gunsmith to reduce and thread the end of the NEF's barrel, too.

I have a Ruger 10/22 with full bbl from AWC.

You will always get some noise if you use the standard long rifle ammo which is what AWC says to use in mine.
It is the noise from the sonic crack and some bolt noise but still very, very quite.
It is stupid that we can not get silencers with ease to use on all firearms. It would save hearing and make for much happier neighbors where shooting is done due to reduced noise.

You can quiet down a 10/22 by replacing the factory metal recoil cross bolt in the back of the action with one of the synthetic ones. It will be quieter and will reduce the impact on the back of the action. I have seen a couple 10/22's that developed cracks around the steel
crossbolts. The synthetic cross bolt will eventually wear out, but it's easy to replace.

Amen to the plastic cross bolt recoil buffer. Cheap at Midway, really eases the action noise. While you are at it, add the Volquartsen target hammer. THat, with no other mod, will lighten the trigger to a very crisp 2-2 1/2 lbs.

Do you own an AR. If so buy a 22lr upper. It will already be threaded .5/28 and the operation is pretty quiet.

I have a screw on suppressor for the .22 rimfire made by George Vais of the Vais muzzle brake fame on a 10/22 and on a CZ bolt action and without a doubt I would recommend a bolt action. There is an amazing amount of noise from the action of the 10/22 which is not present in the bolt action. Another thing that was interesting to hear, with the standard velocity ammo, was the sound that the bullet makes when it hits stuff!!!! Geoge Vais at 208-323-7674 for a vey effective suppressor.

Got to agree with the CZ. My fave at the moment is a CZ bolt action with the 16" barrel. Using Sub Sonic ammo and a cheap PH silencer it's REAL QUIET and not too long.

The bolt on the 10/22 can be made to lock eliminating action noise but rendering it a single shot. There is a photo and write up about this made for military use suppressed 10/22 in Workmans book " The 10/22"
