marlin model 781 extractor problem
i have had a marlin m781 for about 27 years. it is a bolt-action with a tubular magazine and is a very fine-shooting and accurate rifle and all parts are in very good condition.

for several years i've had problems with the extractor; occasionally, it does not "grab" the shells after firing. sometimes, it finally grabs on the 4th or 5th try, other times it takes a pen knife or other device to remove the shell. my observation is that it happens more often with the nickel-plated shells than with the brass, but it does happen with both. the extractor doesn't seem to be dirty or bent, and i clean bore regularly.

i know that this is an older rifle, probably with an older design, but hopefully one or two members have the same rifle and can perhaps offer some ideas?

I would guess that the extractor has some wear on it and slips off the rim, or that the chamber has had a few too many 22 shorts run through it and the cases bulge a little.
