cal pappasWeatherby .22--a couple of questions for you
Gentlemen:
What do I have here—a shooter or a collectable .22?
I searched for a Weatherby Mark XXII for some time. I wanted the tube model, rosewood for end tip and grip cap, and the rubber thin red pad. I missed many of Guns International and am not much of a bidder on Gun Broker. Some I passed on that I thought were priced too high. Anyway…
I was contacted by a gent who saw my ad and he had one for sale and he lived just down the road from me. I went to see it and bought it even though it was not what I sought. Here is what I have.
A Mark XXII from the early 1990s made in Italy. Clip model with no rosewood cap or tip. It has a black butt plate and a blond color stock. In the original box (box is rough), but no instructions. Also with a Weatherby .22 scope from the same era that may never have been mounted. The scope is in its original box with instructions. The owner stateed the rifle is unfired.
The owner’s father purchased the rifle at a military base in Greenland in the early 1990s, with the scope. He brought them home and they remained in a closet for decades.
The pull is two inches short for me so a slip on pad will be added to make it closer to my desired pull. And, I can mount the scope and fire it often, maybe hunt some grouse here on the glorious 10th.
Tell me, please, what do I have here? Do I have a shooter? Or, should it remain in its unfired condition with 100% blue and a couple of small stock dings only. Super clean and about as new as it can get. And, should I continue to look for my desired Mark XXII with the features listed above. I just want a .22 to plink and have fun with. I’m not a collector.
Your help and opinions are appreciated. I have more pics if you want them.
Cal

Samuel_HoggsonThere's a few on GB right now. Just one has bids, and it's currently at $480, tube-fed version (brings more), looks about 95%, no box, but with scope.
Among those with no bids are some silly starting prices. I think you could easily get $800 for yours, unfired with box. Maybe $1200 to the right buyer on a good day.
You have to decide whether the rifle is what you want as a shooter, or whether you'd be better served by selling.......before firing that first shot.
Buddy got this one from Cabelasa couple of years ago for $850-ish. I like the blonde wood

vapodogI've owned three of them....two were clip fed and one was tube fed.
IMO they were extremely accurate rifles....but highly prone to jamming.

I respectfully disagree. Duct tape two .22s together and one has a Weatherby double auto Mark XXII!
Cheers,
Cal
