Stainless 10/22 What the HECK?
I got a stainless 10/22 a few weeks ago. I took it out for the firsr time this last weed end. After riding in the "Quad gun rack" (That is soft rubber) for about 4 hours the first day I noticed that the barrel was flaking? It looks like Ruger has coated this gun to look like a Stainless? Or has put a coating over the stainless? Im not sure what the deal is. Can somebody educate me on this? Thanks Marc

Hot CoreHey Marc, I'd be interested in what you find out too. Do you plan to call Ruger? The number should be inside your Owners Manual.

Stryker60Yep, the new Rugers have a painted finish. To many, it looks like crap and does not weather well. The "stainless" receiver has always had a clear coat, but recently Ruger has gone to a painted finish on the stainless barrels. There have been many discussions of this on rimfirecentral.com. In this one, the painted finish was removed and a little polish work made a dramatic difference:http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=336307&highlight=painted+finish+stainless

The MetalsmithHuh?! That's pretty crappy. I have one of the older stainless / mannlicher walnut stock 10/22's and it's definitly stainless, having survived many a cabin and boat trip up in kodiak. Wonder why they're resorting to el cheapo now?

mousegun1The Ruger 10-22 receiver is aluminum not stainless and had a clear over to keep it shiny. As mentioned above the receiver is no longer anodized black ,they are painted-the trigger unit is now plastic. But Hell, you are gonna trade everything in it out any ways.

RiverduckThat's a bad move Ruger.
I have an old 10/22T with the rotary hammered stainless bull barrel and it is stunning. Firearm jewelry.

That barrel you mention is one of the most beautiful of all barrels that Ruger has made.

Idaho SharpshooterI bought one of those when they came out. Shoots very well, and they look like jewelry. Get a matte finish Leupold 3-9 and you are set for life.
The barrel finish was really sweet.

homebrewerI built my 10/22 from parts purchased all over the web and at gunshows. My receiver is 7075-T6 billet, made by some outfit up in Bonner's Ferry, ID. Has a Picatinny rail on top. Trigger is Kidd. Barrel is Clark Custom. Stock is Revival Industries, lefthand thumbhole. It gets a different scope depending on what it's going to do that day. The gun will shoot small holes with good ammo. Now it just needs someone at the wheel who can really shoot...
