How do PM's disappear?

I was in recent correspondence with a member and today I discovered the entire thread has vanished. If that person deleted his PM's would that also delete his responses to me?

It is the same thing with a thread, if -you- start a thread and later delete it, the entire thing disappears. I believe it is the same way with PM's.

If I am mistaken then someone will be along shortly and correct me.
