how to do private message

Been a while since I visited.

Can't figure out new(?) pm system. When I go to do a private message I get a window that displays two smaller windows with "my contacts" and "invited members". And nothing I do causes any change to that window.
All I want to do is post a pm to another member in reply per his request for information.

Click on their user name in a post.

Select 'invite to a private topic'.

Type your message and click 'post now'.
