pdhntr1Moving to St. Lawrence Island
Hi everyone,
Have a friend that got a job on St. Lawrence Island, and asked me to find out some info if I could.
He is planning on driving up to Anchorage, store his pick-up/camper and then fly to Nome and from there to the Island. I will try to list his questions:
1. Is there hunting on St. Lawrence? If yes, for what?
2. Should he bring a gun from the states, or is it cheaper/less hassle to get one up there.
3. Canadian customs problem?? (see 2 above)
4. If you guys have any other advise, please feel free.
Thanks so much for the help.

MARK H. YOUNGI lived in Dillingham, AK for 22 years but I don't know much about St. Lawrence. I would advise your friend to talk to Alaska F&G about hunting out there. I believe it is all marine related and if that is the case the natives are the only one that can hunt other than ducks. As for his guns just ask Canadian customs what he has to do if he is just passing through. When I did it years ago there was no papaerwork but that may have all changed.
Regards,
Mark

Paul HCan't comment on hunting there. As far as guns through Canada, the last thing I've heard you have to register your guns and pay a $50 Canadian fee to transport them through Canada. I think you need to run the paperwork before getting to the border as well. Handguns aren't permitted, and I believe they have a different requirement about minimum barrel length on shotguns then the US. I haven't taken guns through Canada since the rules change, nor do I plan to.
I think he'll find being out there a unique experience.
