Tent for Alaska
Well most of you know, I am going to Ak for my hunt for Caribou. I have a dome tent that I use for camping, but I think I want a better tent for AK. I looked in Cabelas and found a tent that is semi domed and has a little more head room over the dome tent. What is your suggestion on tents? There is going to be 2 of us, but I want to keep my gear inside the tent as well. I am looking at a 4 man tent called the outback lodge.

RH1: By your post I assume you are going on a drop hunt where you'll supply your own camping equipment, etc. If so check with the flight service most either rent camping equipment or know where you can. The trips I've made out onto the tundra I've always used a Cabelas outfiitter series 6 man tent with the rain fly. Cabelas may call it a 6 man tent but if you get stuck in it for 2 days straight along with gear you'll swear it is a two man at best.
BTW keep you food an trash WELL away from your sleeping tentb bears know the " camping hunter= food" game very well!

Redhawk,

Do not buy cheap! I promise you will be sorry! Buy any tent by North Face and your in good shape. I reecommend the VE-25. A big tent will have more wind resistance and be more likely to blow away. Literally. Get some real stakes for it also (the yellow plastic 8"-12") and stake out every spot that will take a stake. Don't screw around with your shelter it could save your life.

Mark

I dont know what they cost but I recently spent 10 days in this Weatherport tent. They are made in Colorado.

Even with winds in the 40 mph range it was quite stable and comfortable for 3 people with gear and cooking area inside.

Redhawk 1,

Go to the Kifaru website and checkout their tipis. We've been using them for a couple of years and they have taken everything the Alaska Peninsula and the Brook's range have dished out and then some. They're spendy but they're very roomy, bright(material lets in lots of light), and very light and easy to put up.

I have looked at the North face and it looks like a great tent. I do understand the importance of a good tent. I am considering the North face tent now. I will get with the guy taking us on the hunt and see what he thinks.
Thanks for the info.
