TrademarkTexanPtarm and Fish in/around Malchatna herd
I'll be hunting the Malchatna herd in Sept. I would like to hunt birds and fish, if time permits. Any suggestions?
Is it even worth toting an extra gun and rod?
Depends... There is a lot of good fishing in the Mulchatna drainage , but you may not be close enough to any of it to take advantage of it... There are also lots of ptarmigan in many areas, but again some areas are better than others..
Your outfitter, air taxi operator or whoever is transporting you into the area should be able to answer your questions..
If you will be close to a lake or river, defintely take a rod and some medium sized spinning lures...Fishing is excellent in some places for grayling, dolly varden, pike, rainbows and several species of salmon...

Brother DaveI would recommend taking a light spin outfit with small spinners and a .22 pistol.
It's what I take, and I've had a blast shooting ptarmigan and catching grayling.
Good eatin'...

MARK H. YOUNGTrademark,
Take a pack rod and .22 pistol as suggested but don't expect too much. I've never been dropped on a pond for hunting that was good fishing. It could happen but don't plan on it. A couple of times we could have shot several ptarmigan and spruce grouse. I guess on a drop-off I just try to keep everything to a minimum so I leave the extra guns and rods at home.
Regards,
Mark
