Alaska Reloaders?

Bob Graham is a 73 year-old sheep guide who lives in Wasilla, and I'll be taking him on his first African hunt this June. He's always dreamed of shooting a Cape Buffalo, and I intend to scratch that off his Bucket List :-)

A Ruger exec gave him an RSM as a tip some time ago, in 416 Rigby. He's a bit gun-shy about the caliber, and was talking about putting a brake on it. Rather than that, I'd like to have someone load him up some ammunition with a 350 or 400gr bullet at 2,100 fps or so to tone it down a bit. I sent him factory ammunition last year, so he could either trade that towards your reloads, or perhaps use them to make the new ammo.

Any volunteers to help Bob realize his dream?

Jon, I am certainly willing to do what I can for Bobby. Will probably see him tomorrow and could even offer to loan him a proper buff rifle like a 9.3x62 that wouldn't kick him too much.
I would also even be willing to tag along as his gun bearer

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Jon,

I'm sure Bob wants to use his 416 Rigby but Phil's suggestions is a good one. Even loaded down to 2100 fps it takes a lot of powder to get that velocity in that huge 416 case and that equals recoil. Perhaps a 9.3 or 375 would work better. Also the RSM is a huge heavy rifle and a 9.3 or 375 might be handier and easier to carry. JMO for what it's worth.

Thanks Phil and Mark. Might be a good idea. I was thinking I could go with him until he gets his Buff, and he could use my R8 Blaser in 375. Not sure how intent on his 416 Rigby he is. Phil, let me know what he says.

Jon, I am up at Taj and Luke's house in Fairbanks and located my extra set of 416 Rigby dies so will work with Bobby when I get back in the valley next week.

I don't have any of the stuff for a 416, but I've got a 404, that would be a bit gentler on the shoulder.

I'm here in Wasilla. If it'd make an old sheep guides hunt, I'd gladly offer it up.

Sissy Slots ? For a guide ? He must have hung around you wayyy to long

Jon as you well know that is a heavy rifle over 10lbs....which is great for recoil taming and that's why they have gun bearers in camp. With a 350grain TSX bullet at 2100-2200 fps that would be easy on the shoulder and do a fine job on the buff. Phil might be able to work up some plinking loads also.

I've got my dies in the valley now and will talk with Bob but if he is seriously looking at adding sissy slots he probably can get by with factory ammo.
I wonder if his PH is a fan of them ?

I don't think Nixon cares. As long as Bob is confident and comfortable, we'll be good to go. How about a 350gr at 2,200 fps? In a 10-11 lbs Ruger RSM all scoped up, that should be a pussycat.

When i shot my 416rigby i used the lead sled that really tamed the recoil my load was 98gr of h4831 w/400gr tsx. When i used to for bears i never felt the recoil due to the adrenaline.

My 9lb 458 with 450gr bullets at 2150 fps is a pussycat. Way more user friendly than a 300 mag at 3000 fps. IMHO

A 400 grain bullet at 2150 works pretty well on virtually everything. It feels more like a .375 is what the 404 earned it reputation with.

Phil I've lost my issue of Handloader where you and Taz were testing bullets and loads. Do you know how I could get ahold of that article?

What 400gr bullet do you suggest?

Phil, thanks. He said he would have them today. I looked through my bullet selection, and have quite a few Barnes 300 and 350gr X bullets. Maybe a load at 2,200 fps with a 350gr would work well, on both ends of the rifle.

A pile of Barnes X 350gr bullets are on their way up. I'm waiting for Barnes to recommend a 2,200 fps load with these bullets, then we'll be good-to-go.
