I wish to hunt in the spring of 2006 and would like

I have a relationship with some of the best operators in the business for bears. The prices range from $9500-$14000.
Any of these guys will give you a fabulous experience in the field and probably a bear you'll be proud of.

It is a good thing you are thnking of 2006 as most of the best guys particularly on the Peninsula are booked way ahead.

A good source for skull sizes is the Boone & Crockett record book. Personally I feel the quality of the coat far outweighs the skull size and rug size as determining the value of the trophy.

I know guides in both areas and I would highly recommend the alaskan pen. for a brown bear hunt. theres big bears on kodiak but the next record is gonna come from the pen.

Contact the area biologist of the two areas, they will send you a file showing age, sex, skull width and length, area killed and date in addition to outfitter and date.

My understanding is that the measurement for length they take is not the same as B&C, they end at the bone, not the teeth. I was informed of this last month while watching the State Trooper measure skulls. But you will see from the data that some big heads come from both places and there may be a slight advantage toward the peninsula in the last 10 yrs.

Skull size is not everything at least for me, as in this country any good haired bear over 8' is a trophy you will likly earn.

Airplane or Boat are other things to consider. Most of the hunts on the peninsula are Super Cub into a spike camp.

Prepare for a challenging physical hunt in rain and wind, make certain you can carry a pack and climb in ankle fit hip boots. It can be a wonderfull hunt, do your homework.

If you don't have to hunt with one of the big name outfitters for the largest bear possible and are willing to ruff it.You can find hunts in the $7000-$9000 range. You will have to do a lot more research. You don't have to be a millionaire to hunt brown bears, But it does help.

I am sorry I meant to recommend Warren Johnson he lives in Kenai and hunts on the peninsula.

I can book you with Phil Shoemaker and you will surly get a great bear..but he is not inexpensive because he hunts his country very conservitivly, about 5 or 6 bear...so he has to charge a little more...Check out Palmers bear on this thread...
