A7DaveAnyone ever hunted the winter season 40 Mile Caribou?
Was skunked in September. Has anyone hunted them in winter? Assuming it opens, I might head up towards Chicken/Eagle in December if I can get the time off.

458WinIt can become quite the circus if you decide to head up towrd Circle. But if you hit the herd it can also be productive
Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Cold Trigger FingerIf its anything like the Unit 13 late season opener when all the state tier hunts and the subsistence hunt opens on the same morning and same place, a circus is an understatement. . Everyone trying to find part of the Nelchina herd cross the Richardson Highway. 12' wide lanes with double tankers coming both up and down the highway and these city guys stopping and jumping out of their pickup in blind curves. , its about the only place where I'm worried about getting shot just passing thru.
Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

cal pappasHow about using a snow machine on the Taylor Highway. Is the road open in the winter to Chicken? If so, drive there and show machine to the high country above the tree line in the Eagle area.

A7DaveThat's what I was thinking about, Cal. That would be a fun trip. A buddy struck out on a fly-in hunt last August, so we may try the snow machine route around Chicken.
Combat fishing on the Kenai is one thing, combat hunting along the Richardson is another.

ZhurhFriend drove down to flats (40 miles from Eagle), no tracks. Heard a few were down at Jack Wade, but most over towards border. Road is closed and we got another snow last two days. I ain't driving 75 miles for no caribou; and if I can't shoot them from the truck, don't need them anyway. Road up this way is drifting. Bo broke down at Walkers Fork a week back, had to walk 16 miles to Chicken; wore his old bones out.
Cal, I didn't see you up Eagle over the 4th, maybe nx year. I checked out two of your books while at Elliots this fall; quite interesting, spent an entire night reading; you did a great job.

Thanks for the kind words. I sadly missed Eagle last summer but will be there on the 4th in '15. I have a new book out and Elliot is on for a copy.
Cheers,
Cal
