scr83jpM1 Garand
If I was heading for an Alaskan Griz hunt I'd bring my M1 Garand after sending it to this shop:
http://www.gokart.net/shop-utopia/mccann/rifles/458garand/magnum2/magnum2.html and have it converted to the 338 or 458 it should work on any bear!

It's cheaper to just buy a Ruger 375 and that's with a scope.

My experience with pkg deal scopes hasn't been good for the most part they're cheap junk so I only buy the plain rifle.

grizz007scr83jp, I would suspect if you had that kind of money for a hunt here in Ak. and you chose one of them calibers that rifle would not fail you. It is hard to overcome the mind set with the use of "only" a bolt gun but the Garand is reliable.
I carry mine in my boat with 150FMJ and 8 rounds. I have tinkered around with the McCann adj. gas plugs and ............not sold on it entirely. I loaded 180grn Partitions and 4064 I believe and around 2500fps and fed reliable in it. Some more bullets down the road for trial and error will be the 168TSX in it-that should be a good one.
My Garand is not the primary hunting tool though, a scoped bolt gun is, the Garand is the "assault" tool for the last resort kind of thing.

No Ruger rifle I know of comes pckg'ed with a scope, I am just saying you can slap a $1500 scope on the Ruger and it will still be cheaper. With the rest of the money left you can have a good time at ABC.

bobmnWhy convert? Read "Of Bench and Bears: Alaska's Bear Hunting Judge" by Richard C. Folta. The judge started brown bear hunting with a Remington Model 1906 in 35 Remington but upgraded to a 30/06 M-1 Garand because he "was a solo hunter much of the time" (page 87). Only hits count.
