Fly Fishing in August.
I will be hunting in the Brooks range in Mid August and want to bring some fishing gear. I have a 5 weight rod, should I get something heavier? What kind of line would you recommend? Flies? I will probably bring a spinner too with some spoons. What species can I expect to run into?

Thanks,
Alex

Depends where in the Brooks your at, the 5 wt will be fine for grayling, and smaller char, but there are a few lakes that hold good size lake trout, like Chandalar lake etc. If your flyfishing for Arctic Char, I would go with a 7 or 8 weight fly rod, it would also help with the fast water up there in a few rivers up north, but if your fishing smaller creeks and streams...5 wt is fine.

Pack Wolly Boogger's in Olive,Black,Brown.. I'd say Your 5 Wt/WF Line is fine and leave it at that.. We can't bring everything on these type's of trip's..
I've caught many fish in AK on a 5 WT.. My best Bow was caught on a 5 Wt .. 30".. I don't know the weight let's just say it was 12 ++..

Agreed, the 5 wt should be fine for fishing up north. I used a 5 piece 5 wt last year and caught some pretty good sized grayling with it while caribou hunting. Didn't have any luck with the char but they were there. Sure is a nice way to break up the day when your out chasing critters for days at a time.

I concur. A 5 wt rod is fine. I've caught dozens of 12-20lb silvers with my 5wt...just bring some heavy leader / tippet along.
