vicvanbSomething seems fishy about this story.
The map (very hard to read) shows the islands way beyond Alaska's 200 mile offshore limit, much closer to Russia. I don't think these are actually Alaska's islands.
Nothing in the Alaska media has reported this story.

gumboot458If u think about the logistics of getting oil from there . If the map is correct .u will know that the chances of us ever drilling there are slim to none . U should see all the crap that needs to be gone thru to drill a well in oil fields we already own . ..
As has been stated they look like they r outside our bounderies .

N E 450 No2Gentlemen,
I do not know the whole history of these Islands, but distance from Alaska is not an issue, look at Hawaii, it is more than 200 miles from California, and look at the Falklands, more than 200 miles from England...
Now I do not like the fact of giving any land away, but there may be some other issues.
Is it practicle to drill for oil there now???, or in the future??
What do you do if it is USA Land and you find out the Russians are ding something on those Islands??? Do you start a war over it??? Is it just easier to give them away, and not have to worry about them??? Was there some other considerations made, ie like fishing areas, other drilling site concessions???
Just remember sometimes you do not get the whole story from the press.
