416 speer 350 mag tip
Wondering what you guys think of loading speer 350gr mag-tip in the 416ruger, I know it will work for deer but what about brown bears?? Just asking since there half the price of barnes..I know dont skimp on bullets but am looking for a little cheaper way to shoot alot and not break the bank and still be comfortable with the bears around..thanks

I shot a 500lb black with it got 39 plus inchs of pentitation recoverd bullet weighed 270 grs after smashing both shoulders and spine.

The bear was laying down when I shot him I recovered the bullet in the right leg just above the paw. Never found the second shot went thru side to side.

Muzzle vel 2450 distance 40 yards

I used the 350 gr Speer on a 416 Rem on a good sized black bear 7 or 8 years ago. Smashed both front shoulders and left a hole on the off side you could throw your hat through.

If they shoot near to the same point of aim can you practice with the cheep-o's and hunt with the premiums? Thats what I do with my big bores.

Consdering all the bears that have been taken by much less gun over the past century, I'd say it will be more than enough. My only concern with cup/core bullets is pushing them too fast. In smaller bores I think 2700 fps is a prudent max velocity for cup cores, but in big bores I think you'll find the most consistant performance when you keep their muzzle velocity to 2400-2500 fps.

So my thinking is if you are willing to back off the throttle slightly, and you'll still have a flat shooting 250yd gun, by all means use them.

But if you want to push a 350 as fast as the Ruger is capable of, by all means spend the couple extra bucks on the barnes. And I think you'll find a 416 with a 350 gr X at 2600-2700 fps is going to be about the ultimate combination on big bears, capable of a fist size wound in and out from near any angle or through any bones.

IN my 416 taylor everything from 300gr to 400 gr shoot into the same ragged hole.

Its very nice to have a rifle that well do that. Have not shot all them out to 200 but at 100 yards and under its very nice.

I've had good sucess with them on bear . And as you say the are affordable so not guite as much niggling between the ears everytime your getting ready to fire at paper or a stump ect. At least for me that was the case . They held thier weight pretty good , were accurate in 2 Taylors and 1 Rem Mag . Great bullet for the Taylor as it's alittle shy on copacity . Very bad bullet to shoot a coyote with tho .. their little bodies just can't contain that amount of cross section and velocity . I've shot several deer with that bullet also . Behind the shoulders or head shots only . Killing deer with your bear rifle makes you alot better with your rifle when its time to kill bears..

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Yes they do make a nice mess out of a yote. At 30 yards I do not belive the yote knew what hit him.

I wish someone made a 260-310 grain Barnex Triple shock type bullet for the 416 for those that don't hunt cape buffalo with their 416.

any 416 is good on bears a 350 mag tip will turn a boulder into homemade gravel in a couple shots sonething a 300 mag cant do

i dont shoot bears often but when i do i prefer a 416

Barnes has the 300 gr TSX . It can be launched at 2900 fps from a Rem mag with Rl 15 and 40 64 . 4895 was too fast burning i only gotaround 2840 fps in my 10" twist barrel . .

I really miss that rifle . That is the load I used on the deer in my avatar .

For a meat load , a 400 gr @ 2200 fps works great and doesn't tear uptoo much meat ..
Hawk makes a 300 gr 416 bullet . But for general all around the 350 gr Speer is a really good bullet .

Just shot my 416 ruger this am, just with open sights and was very pleased, although the factory hornadys didnt feed as well as i liked, mostly the top round would get jammed on the melpat of the bullet, just by a little. I am thinking that a sharper design bullet will feed flawlessly. I hope
