I would like to read some first hand knowledge about Nome Alaska, and vicinity. Hunting, fishing, exploring, anything interesting or informative, any season.

I spent 10 days up there and North of Nome in Sept 2008. Nice little town that has "some roads that run north up to Teller and East over to around White Mountain and Golovin. Plenty of ammenities that run a bit more than most of the populated Alaska cities. Three flights per day in/out via Alaska airlines. Active gold dredging during summer on the coast. Not a tree for probably 100+ miles. Average wind speed 9 mph which keeps the bugs down. Several motels and restaurants. Movie theater in with the Subway. Can walk downtown in 10 and drive it in about 2; or less Small sporting goods store; very important to the likes of us.

Good moose, grizzly hunting. Caribou numbers are small. Some wolf, wolverine. Good Ptarmigan. Decent fishing, I guess. Most stuff North of the Imurak Basin is fly in only but some Brevig Misison locals somehow get their ATV's up that way on the river bottoms when the water is down.

Local "Reindeer" herds. Muskox too if you can draw a tag.

Met a young married white nurse here in Central Utah who can't wait to move back "home" to Nome with her husband, who is from Wasilla.

I spent about 15 days in the town of Nome.

You can get on the internet at the library.
The Pizza place has good pizza and good Sushi.

There are plenty of bars on Front Street.

I found the locals, Native Alaskans included to be very friendly.
Food, Whisky, etc are kinda spendy, as you might expect in a place where everything has to be shipped or flown in.
They do have a good grocery store.

If you are there in the winter there is great snowmobiling.

And you can buy fresh live king crab, form the locals that have thier own crab pots out on the frozen sea, again in the winter.

I really enjoyed Nome, I had a great time there.

If you search the web there are live cameras in Nome, at lest one downtown on front Street that shows the visitors center and the sea. the store to the right is a liquor store...

There is also one that shows current conditions at the airport.

I looked at the same site/cameras/weather reports before I went up Sept 2008.

Nome

A great town. I lived there for a few years and wish I hadn't left. It definitely grows on you, and people love it or hate it. Long winters, great people, long winters, and awesome summers. You can be hunting brown bear or moose 20 minutes after work. If you don't mind a bit of effort you can easily find yourself 10-20 miles from the nearest human with the world to yourself or you can party like you're at the end of the earth in town, your choice.

Hunting-wise, moose is good but lots of work for a big one, bears are plentiful but on the small/medium size, and caribou are hit or miss, either none or limit out (5/day) in 30 minutes, depending on the migration.
