Danny Payfmj solids for bear huntnig!!!
Hi
in Africa the fmj solids has been used for a long time and are recommanded for stopping such a huge beasts as rhino and jumbo. my question is why not using Fmj large caliber bullets for large bears ? a good hit from a fmj solid is as deadly as a soft point and a bad hit is as useless.
best regards
danny

JohnTheGreekDanny,
I have twice used solids from my .416 on Black Bear but haven't yet had the luxury of hunting the larger variety. Both bears taken went down without incident and I dont think either Ursus would have dropped any quicker with a soft point in the .416. While I do think, however, that a premium soft point like the Barnes-X has value in these scenarios when dipping below .338 calibre, I would be very tempted to use my solids on Grizzly. I am not a dyed in the wool bear hunter so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt but I have a strong preference for exit wounds and lengthwise penetration if the shot angles presented are less than perfect.
JMHO,
