Kodiak Island
After all my years in Alaska, I am just now going to Kodiak island for Black tail deer. What is the Terrain like and do I need hip waders. I think we will be in the Larsen Bay area, not sure of the exact locastion my buddie hooked me up on a trip with him. He has never been there as-well. Get there on Nov. 2
Thanks Maddog

I grew up on Kodiak and have hunted from the north into Shuyak Island (lots of Stika Spruce trees) to the south into Russian Bay (tall grass & alders) - The best advice is to prepare for a little of everything - Conditions can vary from clear sky to rain sleet and snow in a matter of hours. You name it, it can be there at that time of year. Good waterproof boots and or hip boots or both, Helly & Hansen's or = rain gear a must. Good luck.

MADDOG,

I've hunted Kodiak a couple of times and I've hunted the Larsen Bay area. You'll find quite a bit of alder down low which you'll need to hike through to get to the open grassy hills where the big bucks will be even in November.

I agree that the weather can be schizophrenic and I would recommend good rain gear but I think that a good pair of water proof hunting boots would serve you much better than hip boots. Walking in hilly country in rubber hip boots gets very uncomfortable quickly.

Good Hunting,

Mark

I have only been to kodiak once. I did not need waders.

Head to toe Rain gear was a must. I had rocky bear claw boots.

It snowed some wet snow a couple days and rained the rest of the time.
