416/348

I am looking for information on the 416/348 or called the 416 Alaskan, from what I can find on the net,it is a wildcat on the 348 win,I gather that model 71's lever action rifles were quite popular in Alaska,so I am hoping someone can help with info on ballistics etc,thanks.

I can't find my copy at the moment but" Big Bore" a Gun Digest like book has a very good write-up and ballistic's with most usable bullets for a lever action. Probably find it on E-Bay or Abe Books.

Dave Scovill did a paper back book Lever Actions and it has load data in it on the 416-348. I also did a little bit of experimenting with it too. See what I can find.

I just picked up another 71,I have so far a 450 Alaskan,one of Doug's 475 Turnbull,I love shooting lever actions,& would like to try a 416!

Jim Watts did the original work necking up the .348 case. I owned the first one he did in both .450 and .411. Not sure if he did a .416. The details of his work are in my book on Jim. It is sold out but I have a copy and could get the pages to you if you wish. He also did the .450 Watts on the .375 H&H case.

If I was going to wildcat a .348 and I did. I would go with the .50 Alaskan. There are a decent selection of bullets (I like the 535 grain Woodleigh) and you can easily use cast for practice.

No doubt the 50 is an awesome round,but I am interested in a 40 ish cal round that can duplicate the ballistics of the 450-400 NE.

The only real advantage is the length of the 400 grain bullet this gives you the PLUS ".300" factor that you hear from the PH in Africa.
You can only push it to 2050-2100 FPS at true-real pressure.

a bullet sized .410 or .416 @ 400grs @ 2050-2100 grs would be what I am looking for,my 450-400 gives me about that outta my Heym DR, a classical combination that I would enjoy playing with out of a lever action

I think the 416/348 makes very good sense now compared to a number of years ago because we have so many flat nose bullets in 416 available now. . Bullets that are tough enough for heavy and dangerous game.
As to case shape and reamer design. I'll leave that up to those with more knowledge than I. . Is your Model 71 a Long Tang or Short Tang ? . What method will you use to keep the magazine tube in place?

My rifle is a long tang,I will probably replace the barrel,both my existing conversions have been done at Doug's shop,the magazine tubes are screwed into a dovetail in the barrel & after many rounds this has worked fine,this rifle will go to his shop as well once I have all the info that I need.

I would like to see the article on the 416/348 as well. It is an interesting cartridge basically duplicating the 405 but in a much better package. Don't get your panties in a knot. My dainty little hand does not fit in an 1895 lever loop. The 86/71 are a bit larger and easy to cut and add some length to fit me. Love my 450, 35/348 too, something about those 71s....

I shot a 416/400 wildcat in a Rick Stickley Double rifle way back when ammo for doubles was hard to come by. It was a 450-400-3" necked up to take .416 bullets..It was a great gun and I hot 2100 FPS with it and it killed about like the 450-400, but had better penetration...I still have the RCBS dies for that one, they are hard to sell for sure..I suspect the .416/348 would duplicate that double almost exactly..I would not hesitate to shoot elephant with it and a good solid..
