Kateel River Moose
I've drawn a limited entry permit for the Kateel River this year. I'm looking for any input from others who have hunted this drainage. I am familiar with the general area and logistics for the hunt, but would love any input on this particular river. This will be a D-I-Y hunt, no guides.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill--

I drew that hunt last year. Unfortunately we didn't get to go because of gas prices that went over $8 a gallon.....the guys I was going with had been there the year before and took 6 bulls in 9 days.

Since you say you are familiar with the logistics of it, I would talk to whoever you are using as a transporter to get you up to the Kateel. In short, as you know, it is FAR away. Folks going out there will regularly with hunters will be able to give you the best answers, but many will also will prefer to be guiding you.

Good luck,

Dan

Thanks Dan. Sorry to hear you didn't get to go last year. I already have a plan for transport, and I am defintiely listening to those who will be taking me in and dropping me off. My current plan is a float hunt, and I know I can be dropped off at any of several locations up river. It is always hard to get good information on which portion of the river to concentrte my efforts, etc. I'd love to hear the general plan you were considering last year. Were you going in by boat, or plane? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks for the reply.

We were going down the Yukon, up the Koyukuk, and up the Kateel, by boat the whole way.

Don't forget the check station requirement that's on the island just as you start up the Koyukuk. If you fly in and out you'll need a way to meet that state requirement--call game and fish to be sure.

Also, if you are floating down from the Kateel to that station, make sure you know when you leave your legal hunt unit....much of that part of the Koyukuk was not in the unit I'd drawn a tag for.

Carefully go over the resident/non-resident reg differences so you don't get bit.

Are you planning to fly in and out, or go by boat?

Dan,

Thanks for the input. I've been down the Yukon and up the Koyokuk before. On this trip we plan to fly in, then float out to the koyukuk and be picked up by boat and back to Galena.

Good advice about the check station, etc. We are very familiar with the regs, and while it can be a hassle, we know how to stay legal. Thanks,

Bill
