Backup rifle
Question in regards to the guides in Alaska and the backup rifles they carry for bear. Do they carry open sight rifles or do most of them have smooth barrels with a scope?

My findings with the guides I know, 100% low powered scopes although most of their rifles are equipped with open sights just in case of scope failure. Quick acquisition in low light conditions, better target acquisition in thick cover. Scope much better for guide who is having to make longer shots at times on wounded critters who are trying to get out of Dodge.

The guides I hunted with all favored a 416 Remington. One had a 20 inch barreled 458. All were scoped with low magnification scopes. Most scopes were 1.75x6. They did not care for straight tubed scopes.

The vast majority, but not all, of the guides I know carry scoped rifles, and a good % use straight tubes.

I use a .325 WSM Kimber Montana for grizzly guiding and a .375 Ruger Alaskan for brown bear guiding.

The Kimber carries a 2.5-10x42 scope and that rifle has no open sights.

The Ruger carries a 2.5-8-36 scope and it is in quick detach bases.

I always figured that the outside of a rifle is like and idiot light for what is happening to the important parts that remain unseen.
For that reason I would rather not have the outside much more rust resistant than the bore.
