Boots-Prince Of Whales Black Bear Hunt
I will be hunting POW black bear this September for the first time. Most of our approach will be by small skiffs. I was just planning on bringing two pair leather goretex 10 inch high boots and gaitors. Do I need hip boots or the knee high rubber boots?

Get the Xtratuff rubber boots in one size larger than you wear normally. Inside, wear a pair of Bama socks in your usual foot size. These can be purchased online or in Ketchikan at Tongass Trading Post. You will go through Ketchikan--and will likely overnight there--before going on to POW.

In a pinch, the hip waders will do just OK, but the leather boots and gaiters will be a disappointment.

Our group hunted there about 3 years ago...Basically lived in chest waders part of the time. Rained for the first 36 hours constantly. We had goretex boots, but did not use them. Our hunting was mostly along streams and inlets on the bay where we were. There was a lot of tidal change, and the waders allowed access to the raft when we underestimated the tidal change.

BTW, lots of bears and all five of our group tagged one.

I live in Hip Waders when hunting Black bear on the Island.

No road hunting now in Sept so all your hunting will be in water.

Ankle fit hip boots. If you are staying on a large boat see if they have dryers on board, if not consider getting some (they do make a propane model). Even if you do not fill them with water over the top the body heat and cold water will create a soggy environment. High quality rain gear is a must!

Some merit to hip and chest waders. I'd go chest waders as then your azz won't get as wet.

I have hunted up there 4 yrs ago and it rained 2 inches a day..Go buy waist high waders and put on a good boot that is comfortable. They are tough and breathable so they are the only choice. You can't walk in the timber--too thick so you have to walk up and down the creeks and that is not easy. Bring good bug dope for the no-see-thems..Have fun..... patriot
