Klutina Lake

SnowwolfeKlutina Lake
Would like to try something new this June and fly into Klutina when the ice goes out. Always fished where the river comes from the lake and never did much good.
So this June am thinking of chartering a float plane out of Glenallen and flying to the backside of the lake and camping out for a few days and take my inflatable canoe.
Has anyone fished the backside of the lake on either side? I been told it is full of lake trout along the shore line when the ice goes out. Does the lake have pike?
I have never been further than about 3 miles back from where the river exits the lake. How is the camping back there?

ZhurhHave you ever been 30 miles out Nabessna road, sportsmans paradise? You can usually get into copper & tanada lake from there; good fishing for lakers in June.
We use to ice fish those lakes, ride in on snowmachine. It was important to use whitefish from those lakes to tip jigs. If you used whitefish from the slana river, you didn't do too good. I really think fish know what smells right and what doesn't.

AkshooterMuskegMan- PM me I have a lot of info for you.
Randy -I have only fished where you already have with about the same luck.
Let me know when you go and I'll try to be at my cain up there. I can get you into some good stream fishing there and it's on the way coming and going to Glennallen.

SnowwolfeFigured out you meant cabin

Been meaning to fly back into the lake since the 70's. F&G told me the lake trout in there are bascially untapped. Lake should hold rainbows as well. Could be an interesting 2-3 days and a nice low cost fly in trip. Tons of black bears to shoot as well.

AkshooterNo differant lake. Klutina is 43 miles S.W. of the cabin. I'm sure the lakers are huge there. Sounds like a great trip.
Heres one my brothers boss took out of our lake this winter.

gumboot458AK Shooter . Do u have floats on your airplane ??. . Lee Air flies floats out of Tonsina Lake .. Closest one I know of , but no doubt there are lots around here I don,t know of . ..... That is one big fish !!!
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

AkshooterNo I have tundra tires on my cub but there is'nt much of that country I can't get into.
I don't know about Tonsina lake that would be really close for sure but Lee's dose fly out of tolsona lake and that would make it about a 25 mile run.

SnowwolfeBeen trying to find out info about fishing Klutina for years and always strike out. You would think this lake would be packed full of lakers and rainbows. I know there is a massive king and red run in the river flowing out of it.
Wonder why no one ever flys back in and fishes it?

AkshooterI don't know but maybe it's because they know how to keep there mouth shut. I remember that Ken Bunch used to fly people out of Tolsons into a secret hot spot for lakers years ago but I never did hear where that was.
I've been wondering the same thing about lake Iliamna. 30 years ago when I guided on lake clark I got huge lakers just up from the outlet. my friend got a 34 pounder in 1980 and the next year I got one 35 pounds. He still dos'nt mention the fact that I beet his record by one pound.
Anyway if they have them in Lake Clark you'd think they must in Iliamna but so far I have'nt heard of anyone catching them.
Waterrat you should know?

.
. ADF&G ought to have plenty of info on Klutina . Unless it,s all AHTNA Land ....I'm not much of a fisherman so I have no idea...
.
. I got so spoiled fishing in Southeast that here I don,t even try ..
.
. If a guy lived in Southeast in the summer and the Interior in the winter , That would be about perfect....

Any and all info appreciated.
Not sure about floats or wheels yet. Thinking about paying my deposit with Copper Valley Air. They have a 185 on floats and a couple of wheeled super cubs. They are tons of smaller lakes in this unit. Someone mentioned going in on a supercub on floats. Not sure I can get myself and kid in/out in a single trip.
I pumped Dave at CVA about where they could land on gravel strips, but I have not asked about the smaller lakes. I'm assuming 1 mile or longer is their minimum for a 185.
I'll shoot you a PM with my e-mail address.
