Brown Bear hunt
I am planning to hunt Katmai National Preserve’s Moraine Concession, with Jim Hamilton’s True North Adventures. Any suggestions, has anyone else hunted in this area.

Aziz

I have taken two browns very close to that area (within 20 miles. If you are in good physical condition, weather permiting and shoot straight you should have a chance at an above average bear in the area. Is the hunt a fall or spring hunt?

Hello Aziz
I'm sure I can answer any question you have about this hunt. I'm very familiar with it.

You can expect to see good numbers of bears on this hunt. Even in this area the really big bears are somewhat weary. It won't be unrealistic to hold out for a good size but don't make the mistake of turning down a good bear thinking that 9 foot plus bears are around every corner.

Hello Akshooter

Thank you very much for your input. I want to have realistic expectations so it is very important to have input from people like your self who have hunted the area or know people who have first hand knowledge.

So your advice would be to take a nice 9 footer and not try to hold out expecting to find a 10 foot bear.
My question is given the area I will be hunting would it be realistic to expect a 9-91/2 foot bear and hold out for at least the first 5 days and not shoot a bear less than 9 feet

Any advice or words of wisdom will be appreciated.

Regards
Aziz

You will surly not take the first bear you see.
Normaly you will spend the first day or two just watching and geting to know what there is for bears in the area. You'll see bears throughtout the day but the big old boars work the rivers at night so you and your guide will probably pattern a bear that maybe is spoted leaving the river at daylight up the same trail each morning and put yourself in front of him on the second or third day.
Regardless of any plan you and your guide might come up with any time you see a bear over 9 foot take him
