KabluewyUnfortunately, I didn't take the pictures. A friend sent them to me to report the goings on in the neighborhood. Circumstances have conspired to prevent me from living there just yet, but when I retire I'll spend spring summer and fall there.
For now I try to make two visits a year, in summer for fishing and in October for deer hunting. These brownies make deer hunting a little more exciting than the usual locations.
In the fall these big males have deer on their mind, rather than dear.

If one had a good lens one could still be fairly far away and get good pictures.
Would be interisting to know if the photographer was arm with something else along with his/hers camera.

KabluewyThe pictures were taken with one of those small pocket cameras. The photographer was not armed. They were driving around on the logging roads looking for photo opportunities, since a bunch of relatives were visiting. The only protection they had was the ability to get back in the van and close the door. These bears are used to people watching them, and close encounters happen all the time. It’s rare for something bad to happen, although there have been some notorious events. Bad encounters almost always involve a dead deer, or a sow with cubs, or mistaken identity where the bear thinks he’s stalking a deer, but it’s a berry picker instead. Another problem type bear is the really young ones, just run off by the mother, mayby three years old, and very hungry, not making it on his own very well. The really old bears, starving, are dangerous too, or a previously wounded or crippled bear.
Generally though theses bears are very photogenic and cooperative, and there are lots of them. I generally carry a gun, but I doubt that I’ll ever have to use it. I just feel better with one.
These bears around the road system are acclimated to seeing people and just want to go about their business. Hunting them from the road system is not allowed, so the bears seem to know it’s alright to be seen. They generally move off slowly, but not run away in a panic. However, there are bears on the island who rarely, if ever see people. If you go far enough off the road system one of those bears may be found.
