.50s on bear?
Anyone here use a .50 caliber bolt or lever gun for bear protection or as a stopping rifle?

I doubt I could hang on to one.

I commonly carry a .375 or a .44 revolver or a .45 auto.

I heard a rumor one time that a fed game warden on Kodiak Island used a mini 14 loaded with fmj ammo to go in after bears. I believe the idea was to start pulling the trigger and stop about the time the magazine emptied. fmj would penetrate, .223 would not recoil and so allow for many and frequent follow up shots.

Strictly a rumor, I couldn't verify if I wanted to.

Has any one tried using a WSM case necked up to .458 or .500 ?

Micheal...very cool stuff!

I didn't think I'd want another big bore but those shorties are sweet!

Sling swivels on the stock though? That has to hurt.

How many rounds does a stock win mag box hold?
Have ypou done drop box mags? And finally what are you heaspacing the 50s off of?

Im guessing the recoil would be fierce.

LOL…contrary to Michael I did get a swivel stud bump on the index joint of my left hand with the synthetic Ultimate stocked 458 B&M with full house FN solid load…was the third shot of four and totally my fault for climbing the stock.

Thereafter I attached my sling to each of Michael’s rifles before I shot them so that I could use my normal “hasty sling” shooting position with each rifle. I had no issues thereafter and all rifles were more controllable due to a slightly steadier off hand shooting position.

Not really…I’ve suffered far worse recoil from a military stocked ’03 Springfield and a 12-gauge H&R single shot with duck loads.

Take a look at the females with rifles on page 4 of this thread:
http://forums.accuratereloadin...043/m/6141046131/p/4
The rifle with the sling is Michael458’s M70 AI stocked 50 B&M…it's my sling. No crying from either of them and they shot multiple big bore rifles that day. Biggest thing you’ll want to do with a big bore is assure that the stock properly fits you.

OK, that Ultimate 458 is set up to show you guys what an Alaskan 458 should be. Set up for 300-400 gr bullets. Start running those 450s thru it at 2200 at 6.5 lbs it can be a little hateful. Normally knocks the bark off trigger finger. HEH. The turkish 458 was set up for the 450s! I think Boomy slipped one over on ya!
lol Nope I loaded it myself! Recoil was quite brisk but not punishing with the 450s; but became unremarkable once I attached my sling and used the hasty sling position for off hand shooting.

Edit added:

Boy I sure liked that AI Turkish Walnut stocked 50 B&M rifle...very accurate with all loads...again using the hasty sling position for off hand shooting was quite calm on the shoulder. beer

Michael, I was shooting a lwt, 18" fluted barrel 458 and 416 Taylor built on the stainless Winchester classics 15 years ago.

Before the proper stocks were finished I shot them in the factory Winchester super light and classic stainless synthetic stocks a good bit.

The Taylor would destroy Leopold VXIIIs in a couple dozen rounds. There is obviously some recoil with 4/500s @ 2300fps in a sub 7# rifle.

Personally I prefer no sling on a bush gun but it isn't always practical. If I had a choice I'd want a barrel band. Makes the gun lower profile when it is on a sling as well.

Bolt scuff? This is what I had done to my lwt Winchesters which eliminates the issue.

400/416s and 500/458s. Or 4/500s.

2300 fps and change with 400s in the .416 Taylor was reasonable for pressure signs. 2400 was never going to happen.

2100 for the 458. Any more and I started getting too many pressure signs. The 458 was a bit heavier overall than the Taylor and also never broke a scope.

I like small, light weight, big bores with a few persoanl caveats. But decided to go to longer cases instead of shorter.

Nice work and good luck on your family of cartridges.

I've only had to shoot one with my 505 Gibbs and from that single experience I will say that a hit from 20 feet with 535gr Woodleigh at 2150fps is like dropping a crane on them. They go down fast and hard.

Joe Want , who carried a H&H Royal in .500 Nitro told me that of the half dozen bears or so that he had had to kill the results were the same.

rotflmo Yep your comment reminds me of the comments heard in fishing tournaments East of the Rockies some 20 years or so ago.

Seems like the West Coast fishermen using their little 4” finesse worms and techniques were the brunt of many jokes and much laughter by the good ol boys who were quite knowledgeable that largemouth bass throughout the Southeast required “traditional worm fishing techniques”…generally accomplished with bulky 8”-12” long worm. Yep the jokes and laughter continued by the traditionalist worm fisherman until they’d had their collective asses kicked tournament after tournament by that sissy fishing and slow as they were it even finally dawned on them that if they ever wanted to win a fishing tournament again that they’d better learn to fish that sissy West Coast worming technique.

Oh yeah…I’m a good ol Southern boy raised on West Coast fishing techniques…never fished professionally myself though. Cool

Yep a cough silencer would be good…especially if accompanied by a large cork…posterior size…to save a few traditionalist' skivvies. animal Perhaps even a set of ear plugs...gotta keep those ears clean ya know.

I've never seen a post by Busheler that was in the least bit constructive. Everything has been a derogatory, insulting, smart alack remark. Well, I put him on my "ignore list" so I don't have to tolerate it any more.

Texans have yet to be known for their comprehension and I'll feign my "surprise" that you seem bent to so eloquently carry on that plight.

I'll be curious to see how much bandwidth is burned up,in regards to her long/awkward silence...and the Phantom Bear?

I knew if only obviously, that asking for you and a 50 with a Bear was a UnGodly longshot,so I tossed you a cookie and offered to concede your being with ANY rifle/ANY Bear(because in the end it was going to add very favorably to the inherent humor).

Cracks me up,when those who have done the least, wanna talk the most. Do continue,as only someone as clueless as you can.

You Do-nuthins crack me up! The list of things that you cannot see,is indeed also impressive in it's magnitude.

Groovin' on how at ease you are in talking out your ass,in regards to things you've never seen...let alone done.

I mentioned awhile ago,how you were making steps in the right direction,to shut up and I now suggest you add "delete" to that sage wisdom.

Though my fingers remain crossed, that you yet again refrain.

The beautiful thing is,stupidity of your magnitude cannot be feigned and that do sweeten the pot.

I imagine flailing cartoons about,is far easier for you than talking about the crux germane and in the firsthand.

Don't confuse opinion with fact,as those differences are stark...as you so eloquently reiterate repeatedly.

You'll not want to try to keep pace with my breadth of experience,if only obviously.

In the interim,I find it exceedingly humorous that you muse having ANY firsthand experience with Bears...with ANY chambering.

I doubt you've even seen one in a Zoo.

Admittedly my batting average is well beyond uncanny...due mainly to experience.

How much more sad could it get, than someone who has never done it,feigning that it was plausible that they had?!!? You Do-nothins never cease to amaze me!
