NickuduAlaska Bear Stories
For those who don't visit "The Nickudu Files", I'm posting here, briefly, some of the Alaska bear articles which have appeared there recently and to inform that I'll be posting similar articles in weeks to come. Do come and enjoy.
Alaska Bear StoriesSidenote to the Goerg story......
I seem to remember that some of his guns turned up at gun shops in Washington state. Maybe someone else remembers more?
Thanks Nick.

ARTJR338WMNick,
Is there any chance you remeber or are familure with a bear story out of Alska from a 3-6 years ago about a hunter who wound up being charged by and forced to kill a brown bear of mamoth praportions, that as it turned out from the subsiquint Alaska F&G investigation had the remains of one back packer still inside it and was linked to the death of another one.
This bear also was found to have six .38 cal handgun slugs in it, presumably from the BPer he dined on. I use to have both the story and the photos, but have since lost the story.
If I recall correctly, this "brownie" is now a full sized mount on display in one of Alaskas airports. The story I read if I recall correctly, stated that this bore was one of the largest ever taken in Alaskas history, and anywhere for that matter. I may be misquoting, but I think it squared out at something in the 12 to 13 foot range and its estimated live weight was over 1700 lbs.
The hunter who killed it was I think, a resident of Alaska. He was hunting for Sitka deer when he met up with the bear. He was carring and shot the bear with a BAR in 7mm Remington Magnum.
If you can find the story and the related photos of the bear and post them here i think all who view them would come away with the same feeling of awe and in conpairison of the dead bear, compleat insignificance. I recall the photos of the hunter who shot it holding up one of the departed bears paws, and it looked like to me he was holding up the back of a black dirty chair with huge claws comming out of the top of it.
Any how please see if you can find the story and pics and post them here.

george roofArt, are you talking about that hoax that was on the internet? That was the story of 3 separate bears made into one big lie. Go to
www.snopes.com and read about it. The Brownie in Anchorage has been there for a LONG LONG time. I first saw it when I flew in there in 1965 I think. Same with the polar bear. The brown bear on the internet story really wasn't that big a bear considering brown bear proportions.

ARTJR338WMRMiller, Thank you, yes thats the one I had. I guess I should elaberate a little more. My friend worked as a packer for Feagis, or Feigis Outfitters(I know I spelled that one wrong) for two or three summers. He had spent 7 or eight summers in Alaska working as a packer, for the state parks, and for a sport fishing outfitter. He had made quite a few friends in doing so that are Alaska resdents. One of them emailed to him the story I recounted here along with those same pics, he then emailed it to me. I am glad now I have the true story.
Grandma said never beleive anything you hear and only 1/2 what you read, as true now as it was 120yrs ago when grandma was told it.
