What cartridges (and bullet weights) would most likely be found in a Alaskan town?

What would you define as an Alaksan town? Serious question. In Anchorage you could find most everything you'd find in the lower 48, and likely a better selection of big bore ammo.

If I were to guess at more outlying areas I'd say for rifles 223, 243, .270, .308(maybe), 30-06, 300 win mag, 338 win mag and 375 H&H.

When you're talking bush villages, I'd say bring your own.

If I was planning on buying my ammo up here before a hunt I would not get it once out in the bush.

I would make sure to get it in Anchorage or Fairbanks before heading into the bush.

You should be able to find pretty much what you want here in Fbks. too. They even have .300RUM in the larger stores. As was previously mentioned - don't count on getting the more esoteric ammo in the bush villages or even the smaller towns on the road system. It's best to bring your own.Bear in Fairbanks

I have lived in the North Slope, the Aleutians, and Southeast. All in small villages, but in each I was supprised to find that as long as there is a good store in the village, there is always a good selection of ammunition. I have always found the ammo I needed.

Of course I am speaking in terms of standard calibers. The more exotic, less prominent calibers are not cost effective for most small stores to have on hand, just in case someone needs a box or two.

Also, though the store may carry the caliber, I have found the selection of bullet weights are limited to a couple of the more standard grain weights.

The calibers I have usually been able to find without a problem are:

I agree that the larger places, say Juneau, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and a few of the larger cities in Alaska usually have at least one good gun store that carries a good selection of ammo.

We have the Sportsman Warehouse in Fairbanks, as well as several gun/ammo stores. There are more of the same stores in Anchorage, however (larger city). There may be stores in some of the villages where you can buy ammo for the most common calibers, but you would have to pay a lot more for the same ammo. Everything is more expensive out in the bush, because the store owner has to pay more to have things shipped to his or her store.

Loaf of bread is $3.99 and pound of bacon (Hormel), is $7.99. Ammo is running $28.00 for a box of '06 150 grain bronze-point. Very popular shell out here.

Ran into some 30-338 Weatherby ammo in Petersburg a couple years back. It were in the True Value store.
