Any bears out yet? I'm considering heading that way to look for some brownies and blackies.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Fourtyonesixbears are out everywhere..next couple weeks will be good timing just about everywhere...
Wife and I were teachers at Mentasta about 10 years back. Quite a few grizz in that area and they were really hammering the moose calves soon as they dropped. Mid May was when we saw bear crossing road every other day.
Later on when reds were dying along lake shore, the bear came for miles away to clean all those fish up.
I always liked that country out Nabessna Road. There was this lodge, Sportsman Paradise; always had a great time there.

BrettAKSCIWould the old railroad bed be open yet? I'm going to head out bear hunting next weekend and was thinking about heading that way.

KabluewyYesterday, I rode out to the Copper River bridge. I think it's called 27 mile. That's as far as it's open. They are still running snow machines from there, unloading by backing up to a huge snow drift. KB

Saw my first bear this spring, today. We are along Yukon near border with Canada; kinda the coldest part of Alaska so I guess the reason so late.
Our ice went out end of last week, sheep come down drink water out of the river for about 2 weeks this time of year, then retreat high up in rocks for the summer. Bear was 300 yards up from river feeding in the new grass & roots on hillside. Bear saw the sheep and went after them, but the sheep ran faster down hill than bear could.
Haven't had any hit my barrel but they are usually another week or so to get active at my stand. Nice time of year right now.
