Troy Hibbittsa bit of table fare - aka spotted dinner aka axis deer
Having spent our alotted hunting dollars on Africa in June, and having recently purchased a new home in late September (and all that entails) I haven't been out hunting much (and don't have a lease, even). So when my wife informed me that we were out of steaks and that she really wanted to cook her favorite tenderized venison steak wrapped around swiss and mushrooms, I decided it was time to put some spots in the freezer. No, not the African "Mr. Spots", the Texican version (by way of India).
I've got (currently, its for sale) an 8 acre property just off the Nueces River about 4 miles from my Dad's place that has some regular axis traffic, so I went out with the aim of stocking my larder. About 15 minutes after the feeder went off, a group of Axis spikes and younger stags came out and I shot the biggest one . . . not a monster or even a particularly large one, but good eats and I will get that hide tanned for sure!
Oh, and I always enjoy putting the 1953 Savage to good use . . .

300 Savage . . . using 165 gr Hornady Interbonds . . . forget the powder charge off the top of my head.
Recovered what was left of the bullet under the offside skin of the neck.

Its not right on the river . . . river access properties are right across the road. Close enough to the river that Axis use it real regularly.
I'm actually in negotiations to sell it . . . asking price is $33,999

I wouldn't go that far!
To me, axis is a bit more bland than whitetail . . . and I've never had a whitetail that wasn't good to eat, and that includes a one-eyed, sway-backed, toothless old buck that we aged at 10+ . . . I can't say the same for Mule Deer though!
