The first thing I would suggest is go to guide school and get your license. they will most likely have contacts for Outfitters looking for guides.

There was an ad in the Rocky Mountain News classifieds an apprentice in the hunting section, I think it was back in September. Check out there archives.

I have been thinking about these guide schools. Do you get some sort of permit or license to operate as guide. Is there any government agency that issues licences?

Do you need one of these guide schools to work as an outfitter and buy tags etc.

I went to a guide school in Montana in 1988. I've held a guides license in Montana in 88 and 98. At the time all you had to have in Montana is your CPR certification and an outfitter to employ you. The outfitters licenses were regulated by the state and required testing. I don't know about any other states. The guide schools are good because they can put you in touch with people looking for guides.

Guiding is not glamorous or great paying but will provide you with lots of hunting/wilderness and people experiences. Lots of long hours if your hunting off horses out of tent camps. Tent camps are tough when it's below 0 and your packing hay and grain for your stock. I think if I went back I would try to get on with an outfit hunting on a large private ranch, corrals, cook shack, beds and so on.

Word of advice, if you're going to a guide school, check out Jerry Malson outfitters and guide school in Trout Creek Montana. He is A very knowledgable man and one hell of a good guy. They all can help you in job placement.
