MuletrainDeer hunting in Brownwood, TX., with Ryan Campbell
OUTFITTER/GUIDE: Ryan Campbell, hossfly.com, cell 979-777-1725
LAND OWNER/GUIDE: Russell Taylor (no relation to the other Russell Taylor)
LOCATION: S.T. Cutbirth Ranch, outside Brownwood, TX.
ANIMALS HUNTED: Whitetail Deer
ANIMALS OBSERVED BUT NOT HUNTED: lots and lots of turkey, ducks, and a couple of coons.
LODGE: Very nice ranch house on the top of a hill with a beautiful view. Insuite bathrooms, central heat and AC, full kitchen, large livingroom with fireplace and cable TV if you would would like to watch some football while relaxing, very nice covered porch and patio with picnic table and porch swing.
HUNTING METHOD: Mainly box blinds with comfortable seating and easy access. Stands are from 75 to 130 yards from the game feeders. There are also planted supplementry food plots near the stands. Guide stays with the hunter to advise on trophy quality of the game.
HUNTERS: Myself shooting a Ruger #1 International in 7x57mm with Leupold 4x7 scope, 140gr Remington Corelock. My wife shooting a Winchester Mod 70 Featherweight in 7x57mm with 4x Leupold, and 140gr Remington Corelock.
We were taken to the stands and got settled. Saw quite a bit of game Friday evening but did not shoot anything.
Saturday morning Russell and I saw two very nice bucks, several smaller bucks, and some does. Russel gave the two big boys a close inspection and then suggested I take my pick and shoot one of them. He got the video camera rolling and I got the gun ready.
The buck was hit through both front shoulders with a complete pass through shot. His rear end hit the dirt instantly, followed by the front end. Quick clean kill.
That evening my wife and Ryan saw the one they were looking for. She got a shot off just behind the shoulder and the bullet exited the opposite side infront of the rear ham. It was quartering towards her. It ran a few yards and piled up.
That evening Russel's wife, Kitty, came out to the lodge and made a fantastic dinner served with wine. We had a fine meal and some good conversation. They are real nice people and we really enjoyed their company and hospitality.
Sunday morning we went back out for some meat animals. I took a young doe and my wife took a young spike.
All the animals were skinned and quartered in a large barn with scale, skinning gambrel, and running water. They have a nice setup.
That about wrapped up the hunt.
Overall it was a great weekend. Ryan, Russel, and Kitty are great hosts, the ranch is top notch, and the secnery was fantastic.
