<phurley>Dream Elk Hunt for a Grandfather
I just completed an Elk hunt in Colorado with my son and grandson and several friends. We hunt on our own, paying a tresspass fee to a rancher and hunting BLM ground as well as his ground. My grandson and I both got our Cow Elk the first morning early and then became Bull hunters the rest of the week. My son got his Bull and Cow with one shot from a .358 STA of mine loaded with 270 grain North Fork bullets. He drilled the bull at 125 yards through both shoulders. When he approached the Bull he noticed a Cow bedded down about 20 yards behind the bull and she didn't make any attempt to run. Further inspection told him she had a bullet hole in her head, which the next day revealed a perfectely mushroomed .358 North Fork bullet. Only he and I were shooting that particular bullet on the mountain that day. My grandson was shooting a .338 Lapua, also loaded with North Forks. Three shots and four Elk make for a successful hunt, with more opportunities at Bulls later in the week and to have my son and grandson with me for several days was a dream come true. I look forward to many more in the future, with five grandsons coming up.
