I would assume the Vietnamese are eating them; hence a market has developed for the meat which will preclude the need to cull any buffs. They will establish a meat harvesting program like they had a few years ago. Just a guess but I am sure it is a good one.

JCS271Are the dates actual hunt days or is the day on each end a travel day? I am only interested if I could bring my own rifles. What would that entail to bring a bolt and a double? Also what are the travel issues. What airport for commercial flight from the U.S.? Do you then have to charter a flight to your area? What are those costs?

gunslinger55Interested in more info as well. Is there a website etc? Where do you fly into? Charter cost? Northern territories I assume?

They cull thousands already for meat right - why would that affect the lke 300 max we hunters would cull?

stradlingcontractors will come in to the area and pay the council big bucks to muster and ship what is now an exotic nuisance the animals will be live shipped or boxed and shipped to meat markets
the government spent money air killing 4000 head in the swamp last year
the answer j dollar is get off your ass and go shoot 50 or pay the larger fee and kill a hundred in a week it could be your last shot at a large buffalo cull
best I can do for you here
we shot 400 or more in cull activity's
all that meat will go to market and no cost to cull and cash to the aboriginal council and the buffalo go away
so that's the change in the wind blowing over this cull hunt
any one needing info on the hunt pm me in Barry's absents [he goes on hunts] I have web site brochure and travel info
or just read the hunt report in the Australia section from our hunt last fall
tell you what boys you ain't going to shoot any thing like this any where else in the world ever again
Anyway it matters not, because my experience always has been that of---- a loss of snot and enamel on both sides of the 458 Win----

GunsmokeAdventuresThere is now an emerging market to ship buffalo to Vietnam. To date numbers in the swamp have needed culling to maintain some control and lessen environmental impacts. Simple economics is that the traditional Aboriginal landowners will prefer a hundred dollars or more for live animals than you guys leaving them dead on the ground.
You can bring your own guns (bolt action or double). Permits to import can take up to 6 weeks but I assist with this. Due to airline restrictions you will not be able to bring enough ammunition for the amount of animals you will shoot. We will make a plan for that though depending what rifles you bring. hunt dates are inclusive of 2 x travel days and 5 full days hunting. You will need to travel to Darwin Northern Territory. Commercial flights operate to local airstrips @ around $600 one way. A vehicle transfer option is available. I hope I have answered all questions.
Yep, with buffalo having increasing value with these Vietnam shipments, the Traditional Owners and NLC would potentially lose money on culled animals that could have been mustered at some stage. So get in and experience adventure while you can. See my POWs thread in the Photographic forum for pictures I took in my community of fresh-caught buffalo awaiting the truck to the port and the boat to Vietnam.

Idaho SharpshooterAny chance one set of horns and 2 hides for a head/shoulder mount and a flat rug?
Be a pretty good way to break my 450 RUM and 404 Jefferys in.

I was one of the 4 participants who hunted with
Barry in May. It is quite an adventure and a rare opportunity to truly exercise you DG rifle. The greatest limiting factor is having enough ammunition for the task at hand. The airlines limits are 11 lbs per passenger. Extra ammo in calibers like 375 H&H are available in Darwin. Double rifle calibers are rare and special arrangements may be possible with Barry's assistance.
Like all things good in our hunting pursuits, it will NOT last. Do it while it's available and if you can.

DoubleDonHi Gunsmoke. I have too many hunts already scheduled/booked through October and beyond in 2014. If this is available again in 2015, I'm in with a bit of notice. Please keep me on your list. Thanks!

DoglegI've got my components packed for assembly at that end. That and all the loaded .458 I can take.

GunsmokeAdventuresSORRY Idaho Sharpshooter,
We dont have time to stop for the hide and horns ......and as soon as we take any part of the animal a trophy fee is payable to the traditonal landowners. You can take lots of photos though

DoglegMy permits were just approved, and I'm just 3 weeks away from wheels up. I'm shooting ferals with Matt Graham first, then off to hunt buffalo with Gunsmoke and meet Tankhunter at the same time. Can it get any better than this?
Considering that I'll be rejoining old friends, meeting new ones and shooting ammo by the case I don't think it can.

DoglegI had guys that should have been coming, but they got real quiet right around decision time. Oh well, if the opportunity never comes up again it'll be their loss. Some people need everything laid out for them, nice and safe and predictable.

cmfic1I already have a couple other commitments slated...I might of made this one of them had I seen it earlier.....cant wait to read your report

That's how it was for me last year when I first heard of the cull. I was booked for the season and all I could do was check into it, meet Barry and hope that it would still be there this year. So far, so good.

Ok, so horns n hides would draw compensation to the natives. How much would that be?
From the reports Mike posted last yr I understood these cull animals are hauled to the processors for salvaging the meat almost regardless of the species. I've seen pics of donks n brumbies plus the buffs being loaded up.
Don't you have those folks haul off the culls? OR is it because of the swamps and do it in the drying areas. This info would help some of us guys learn more about the doings over there we don't know now.
Many thanks,
George

GunsmokeAdventuresHi George,
the animals are not salvaged. Many years ago there was an abattoir for processing bush meat but no longer . Unfortunately the animals go to waste but we are able to lessen the impact on the fragile environment and the Arafura swamp. We do not target trophy animals on these hunts and any encountered are let walk. Payment to the traditional landowners occurs on trophy hunts where horns and capes can be taken
Most likely the videos you have seen are pet meat contractors. They cull buffalo, feral horse and feral donkey and salvage the carcasses.

ZephyrLeaving this morning to join Barry and GunsmokeAdventures, will in the bush the 11th to the 15th should have a hunt report and pics for all the following week.
Bringing a Mod 70 in 458 Lott, I was planning on bringing my Gibbs 450NE as well but I'm bringing a rifle for a fellow hunter who is joining us in Darwin, Jet Blue will ONLY allow two rifles in one case so the Gibbs will sit this one out.
Shooting 450gr Barnes TSX and 450gr CEB Raptors each at 2200fps.
Will let you know.......
