The roe deer rut is very short and sharp - the doe is in eostrus for only 12 hours in a year. The date of this can be within about a two week period dependant on weather. Either side of a day or two around of this time roe can be very secretive and difficult to find. Its really difficult to predict.
Its true that in the rut they can be relatively easy to call and take - but get that wrong and you can spend a lot of time looking at scenery....

the PomInteresting comment Kuwinda. While the metabolism of Roe must be the same everywhere, the behaviour of bucks and their response to a call seems to vary with climate. I have no experience with Roe in your part of the frozen North of Scotland but when I lived in Galloway bucks would respond to a call from about 26 July to mid August. In Gloucestershire and the New Forest some bucks will come like a rocket any time from 20 July to 20 August. The latest I have had a buck come without hesitation in my own woodland was 22 September when he was already starting to change his summer coat. He was a very heavy headed late middle aged buck and I had trail camera videos of him trying to mate a doe a couple of days earlier. Old bucks seem to respond later in the rut. I also have a trail camera video of a young buck mating what appears to be a well grown doe kid in mid September. She could possibly have been very small yearling doe but either way she stood firm for him.
Some does obviously don't hold in kid in the first round of oestrous so come back on a couple of weeks later. I assume the small number of does on heat in September have aborted for some reason then come back into oestrous.
In Spain the rut tends to be hopeless for calling as the bucks lie up until it cools down, well after dark. As Romania also has very warm summers I am very curious what the period is that bucks will respond.
Even now, after fifty years of Roe stalking, no hunting experience anywhere beats a fine Roe buck charging up in response to a call.
