JGRaiderReferences for Namibian Outfitters, Please!
've been checking around with some safari operators including several in Namibia. It appears to be a buyers market right now. I am looking for the good, bad, and/or ugly for the following (hopefully from personal experience):
1. Orpa Namibia
2. Afrika Jag Namibia
3. Otjinuke Hunting Ranch Namibia

chuckmaxmanI hunted with "Afrika Jag" last year. Great people. Very nice property at the base of the mountains and into the mountains. Thinking about going back for leopard in May or June. Maybe we can share the camp. Lukas has some great packages. A friend of mine and his wife will be hunting with them in May and June.

JGRaiderGlad to hear that about Afrika Jag. I've got a really great package quote on plains game from them. I'm planning May or June myself, hopefully end of May. Thanks.

tendramsSo many options in Namibia! I would contact Westfalen Safaris outside of Outjo. Great people, great hunting! PM our own Greg Brownlee as he books for them.

JGRaiderThanks for the hunt references, but I automatically throw out any outfitter who charges for airport pickup and return.

May I ask- why would you do that?

Air charters must be out too I guess??
15 January 2013, 05:45
JGRaiderMatt, don't be a smartazz. You know perfectly well what I mean. Why should I pay extra for airport pick up when guys like Afrika Jag, Dirk at Orpa, and Otjinuke do it as part of the package.? There's usually not huge differences in day rates and trophy fees, so additional costs just make them uncompetitive, so they're out. I may very well go by myself. Westfalen charges $600 for airport transfers. I can shoot another animal for that $$$ with someone else. Since I'm paying the bill I make the rules.

15 January 2013, 05:58
Matt GrahamYeah I know and sorry I can't help myself!!

The way I see it though it is more than just about shooting XYZ animal Here or There... every deal and hunt is different.... if you shopped on price alone, which is what your last post sounds like, you might be disappointed?? I don't know - maybe I see things differently??
Carry on

PS - I am not commenting on any of those outfits you mentioned, or even the country ... just speaking generally.

JGRaiderThe 3 I asked specifically for references on all check out really well so far. All of them are in the "more free range" Namibia. The way I see it there's no need to pay transfer fees given the way these guys take care of their hunters.
15 January 2013, 06:59
wotnxtFYI I have booked a hunt with Sebra Hunt Safaris in May this year. Pick up and return to Windhoek - about 500kms each way, is included in the hunt price.

tendramsFrankly, free or not, having the outfitters in charge of airport pickup is not the way to go in Namibia. We rented a car which for two weeks wound up costing a good bit less than the pickup charges and we got to see a lot more country. We drove the five hours from Windhoek to the hunt area, then up to Etosha, stayed there for a few days, toured the park, and had a nice leisurely drive back. That sort of flexibility is nice and the independence also makes you feel a lot less like a simple tourist. Frankly, I think most places that charge for airport pickup do so because they would rather people drive themselves in and then they can concentrate exclusively on providing a great hunt. Namibia is not Zim...you will have no problem driving.

Big Game HunterI represent African Twilight Safaris in Namibia. The hunt huge unfenced properties and are a first class outfit. I have hunted with them personally and have sent clients to them.

Mike SmithI guess we need to know what your target species are. The areas hunted will make a difference to some degree. Truthfully Namibia runs a pretty good show for the most part. I like their rules on the taking of trophy animals. They spell out minimum standards. Also you can only export 2 of any one species in any one year if I remember right. Wide open country. Even a fenced conservancy is huge. The fences if there are any are more to keep people out than animals in. Exception being things like black rhino where it goes both ways. Many good outfitters to choose from. I am still a bit pissed at them threatening to target Americans with Lacey act violations for the acts of some bad apples in the ranks of the phs. Few and far between but it only takes one or two. Still a great country and people.

Check into Van Heerden Safaris. My son and I hunted with them a few years ago. Had a great time and shot some fine animals. 4 of them made the Rowland Ward book. We were not trophy hunting. You can deal directly with the owner/PH, Hentie. No middle man.
Good luck.
PS. Almost forgot, no airport transfer fee.

dogcatJamy Traut is as solid as they come. I have been on 9 safaris and he is excellent.

JGRaiderI'm doing a simple plains game hunt....kudu, oryx red hartebeast, Mtn Zebra, Impala type deal. One of the 3 I mentioned will also let me take a waterbuck for $1300. Nobody can touch that deal anywhere. I refuse to travel half way around the world and hunt a 4000 acre high fence. Namibia is more of a PITA to get to but it fits my style a little better. It's a buyer's market right now from what I've seen.

Mike Smithnot in any order
Tommy Hall
Andre du Toit
Kobus Honiball
Hagen Eggert
There are many others as well. These I have first hand experience with. As you say it is a bit of a buyers market right now. Just remember cheapest isn't always the best choice. Too many factors to base a hunt on price alone. Very little of the hunting in Namibia is high fence. It depends on where and who you end up hunting with, but I would add Dik Dik to the list if it is doable. Damara Dik Dik only endemic to Damaraland in Namibia.

interestedHighly recommend Hunters Namibia. Joof and Marina Lamprecht. I note that Marina recently joined AR following DSC. Luxury lodge and reasonable prices. You are the only hunter in camp.
Their son Jofie Lamprecht now has his own company, Jofie Lamprecht Safaris. You can see some of his trophies on YouTube.
Both companies have web sites.
Jofie and Marina are frequent contributors to various African hunting mags and Jofie's photos have been featured in many magazines here and abroad.
Both attend most major shows in the US.
