THE name of former President Sam Nujoma has been dragged into the poaching drama at a Government farm in the South which saw serial poacher Jacques de Waal and two accomplices arrested.
De Waal is no stranger to throwing around the names of well-known personalities in his attempts to be let off the hook. Yesterday he told the Daily Sun that he had had a telephonic interview with Nujoma concerning his predicament after he was arrested last week. “I talked to Dr Nujoma about my position, but I will not tell you about our conversation. It was a discussion between the two of us. First, I wanted to talk to the (Hardap) Governor Katrina Hanse but because I couldn’t get hold of her number, I talked to Dr Nujoma,” he said. De Waal also made a point of telling the Daily Sun that it was wrong to refer to the earlier incidents which saw him clash with the law as poaching.
“I was not involved in poaching, but only in “skelm jag.” Meanwhile an upset Governor Katrina Hanse-Himarwa vehemently denied any involvement in the poaching drama. “I don’t know that man (De Waal). I haven’t even met him and my office even doesn’t have any contact or connections with him. He must account for what he did,” she said.
De Waal, together with two accomplices were caught red-handed at Government farm Neue Haribes, with their loot consisting of three kudus, one gemsbok and five springbucks on Tuesday night. They were arrested and charged with entering a restricted area without permission and killing protected wildlife without a valid permit. The two other accomplices were later released as State witnesses. De Waal at the time produced a letter from the Hardap Governor’s office signed by her personal assistant SS Owambo on her behalf. The letter requested permission to hunt on the farms for the purpose of donating meat to elderly people, purportedly as part of SWAPO’s election campaign.
De Waal was released on Thursday on bail of N$2 000, but the rifle and car he used to hunt as well as the spotlights are impounded by the Police. His case was postponed until 27 January 2011. Governor Hanse-Himarwa told the Daily Sun that she owns a private farm and will never connive with criminals in such dubious matters. “De Waal could have obtained the letter that was in his possession from someone with ill feelings and who wanted to blacken my respected name. I hope the Police come up with the truth that will clear me and my office,” she said.
The Under Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), Simeon Negumbo, has also contacted the Daily Sun to confirm that his office did not issue any permit for hunting at Neue Haribes or Voigtsgrund, the two Government farms acquired recently for resettlement by the Ministry of Lands and Resettlement. “According to our records, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism did not issue any permit to the Governor’s Office or to Mr De Waal to hunt at Voigtsgrund or Neue Haribes,” Negumbo said in a written statement.
