Backpack Advice
Scheduled for my first trip, to Zim, in September. Traveling alone, will take med duffel and TuffPak. Want to get a good backpack for a carryon so I can handle everything alone. Have seen Boyt and Patagonia mentioned on the site. Specific sizes and/or models would be appreciated, or any other brand(s). Thanks.

Mark A.drj, I have three different models of Eberlestock, for different situations. I have been pleased with their packs. Best of luck on your Zim hunt. Mark Hampton
Which one do you recommend?
I have used and highly recommend the Boyt 040 Tac backpack. I use it as my carryon then for my field gear which is usually left in the truck. It will be going with me this Sept to Zim.
Well designed and made.

Mark A.drj, I recently got the Eberlestock Gunslinger II. This is an ideal backpack for carrying your gun, plus other gear you would normally pack on your hunt, keeping both hands free. If I didn't need to carry a gun in the pack, Crooked Horn makes a good unit which I use all the time. Both of the packs mentioned can be used as a carry-on during travel.

Check out the backpack made by Texas
Hunt Co. This is the one Boddington
uses. My family has two of these and
they work fine as caryons and in the field.
Very tough and grauanteed against almost anything. Jeff Wemmer, company owner, posts

Good Luck with your trip.

ddrhookI have been using a cheap old soft sided pack I picked up at a discount store for several years and it works great. I pack my camera in my cloths to protect it and its still forms to the contours of the storage bens on the planes. and the other travelers can break my camera.
PS the thief's seam to look else where when they see my cheap old pack

Have used this pack on two trips the most recent ending last week. Works great as a carry on and as a camera and gear bag while hunting. Hangs well on a gun rack hook on the bakkie and as a pack if or when needed. it's a top quality piece of gear.

Use Enough GunI use a PacSafe backpack. It is a mesh wire frame covered with a ballistic cloth and has a security bag inside in the large compartment that is also mesh wire "insulated", with a cable lock system. No one is going to get into it by slicing the material, and the inner "safe" keeps those who enjoy splitting zippers from reaching your valuables. I have traveled with it to Africa the last three trips and wouldn't travel without it.
