Travelling with a bow into Johannesburg ?
We are taking a compound bow to South Africa to hunt with. Can you tell me what South Africa requires for paperwork, Locked case, etc.? Thanks, Brian

Brian how are you traveling?

If you are flying through Europe, you will need to check their regulations out.

As for South Africa there is nothing needed.
That is if nothing new has been put in place.

Brian, if for some reason you are traveling through Amsterdam, you are not allowed to take broadheads with you period. Also your bow case will not come on the luggage carousal in JNB, but over at the large luggage area, which was not identified very well.

Thanks to everyone, We will be flying Air Canada, then by South Africa Air into Joberg.

Are you saying that there are no Inspections or papers required for a bow and broad heads at OR Tambo International Airport at the present time? Cool! We are flying through Heathrow.
Thanks again. Brian

You might not need the paperwork but understand that your bows will end up with the firearms and that will means a line, SAPS BS, etc. If you can, use a meet and greet and streamline the process.

crane, It is mentioned above that the oversized bow case will end up with the Large luggage not with the guns. Yes? Brian

crane, I just learned that sometimes a bow case end up does in the firearms room by mistake.

Another dumb question, Do you guys use a hard case like a rifle case, or do you use the standard bow case which is kinda soft sided?

Thanks, Brian

Brian- That could be. I have had to transit that airport with bow cases 5 times from 2001 through 2014. Each time it was the same with SAPS. Maybe that has changed. Early on I was specifically labeling my case "Archery Equipment". It did not help. The time I was not using meet and greet took a couple of hours. You might check the Bowsite Africa forum for the very latest.

Brian- You definitely want a bomb proof hard case. I use a Toughpak(sp?) Lots on that here. Consider taking a portable press, spare string, etc. Stuff happens.

Brian it was 2 years ago when I traveled, Detroit, Atlanta to JNB, I had a Cabelas bow case. As stated before my bow ended up in the large luggage area, but remember your in JNB so who knows what the SAPS people will do. Now on my return trip my bow ended up in the CBP gun clearing room in Atlanta go figure.

KWT, Yes, Murphy's Law rules in Africa.

We are getting hard cases and will label them "Sports Qquipment Bow and Arrow". Thanks, Brian

Our last trip my wife and I put crossbows in a SKB double rifle case. No paperwork needed, but we did carry copies of the sale receipts. I would recommend a “meet and greet” service or have your PH meet you. Also recommend this for leaving country. Counter agent wouldn’t allow us to open the case leaving country (after explaining it wasn’t a firearm in the case). Our PH walked with us to the firearms office. One of the worker’s immediately asked for something (no doubt money) while we were opening it. My PH went off on and told him to “have sex with himself” in Afrikaans.

I took a hard case in 2007 and 2008. Both times it ended up at the police station. Starting in 2009 I used a rolling duffle. Foam on the bottom and wrap my bow with coats, clothes and whatever else. Done this three times including this last September. Works like a charm and no questions asked. I don't really think it matters what you do to your hard case. High probability it gets taken. Guy I met last year had archery equipment only written on his case and it was still taken to the station.
