ammo belt
I wasn't sure where to post this, so I put it under travel. I need to buy an ammo belt to carry my 416 Remington rounds when I make my first trip to Zim this September. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I love the fully lined leather belts that Trader Keith sells. I refer to them as the "Tony Makris" belt as this is the belt that Tony wears on Under Wild Skies.

I use the ammo belts from Murray Leather.

All of his "stuff" is first rate.

He is a good guy as well.

Rather than carry a small gun shop on one belt I use a slide for my .416 Rigby.

It has two advantages.
1) The open bottom allows me to use my fingers to push up the rounds into my palm.
2) The limited contact with leather does not allow the build up of verdigris if the rounds are not removed from the belt every night.

It came from one of the bespoke English gun makers but I forget who.

Make sure you realize how much safari ammo weighs. If you need a belt with more than 10 rounds, you're either culling, or maybe shouldn't be hunting anyway!

I find Uncle Mike's slide on 10 round holders work great.

Have used Texas Hunt Co belt slides for several years. Very well made of heavy materials. Come in both 5 and 10 round sizes.

I second the Uncle Mike's ammo slide ---- it works very well and will not green your ammo -- and --- sorry but tried one of the Texas Hunt Co units -- did not like it at all as the grip was so tight that it was close to impossible to retrieve a round in a timely manner --- that ammo holder now resides elsewhere ---- I tossed it.
And --sent an email to Texas Hunt Co re my dissatisfaction with their product --- did not receive any/nada/ zip/zero response --sooooo!!

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

That's why I have a pair of bandoliers crossed over my chest Cool

Seriously, I've had both Texas Hunt Co and Boyt belts slides and been happy with them.

I believe it came from Paul Roberts.

My .416 has a detachable 4 round magazine (horror of all horrors -- I know), but what I use is a double grenade pouch with one soft and one solid magazine, one mag in the rifle with what suits you, and then a 10 round slide, mix and match depending on what you think you'll run up against. That gives me 22 rounds total, which would be mostly softs, unless after ele, but with 5-6 rounds of solids. Not too heavy and seems to work for me (who everyone says carries too much ammo).

The reason you wear a culling belt is for the photo session. I actually did some elephant culling once and shot shot every round on my belt which held eighteen rounds.

I like the saying "better looking at them than for them". Also with the need for several FMJs and some Soft Nose bullets, one often needs to carry twelve plus rounds.

I have a Boyt slide that's okay. Closed bottom, though and if I ever go back, I may look around for something with an open bottom.

Yes I agree with the above comments. I am not one who wants to be looking for ammo in a tight situation. I've been with friends who have wished that they had more ammo with them instead of back at the Bakkie. For me that's never been a problem. Better to carry more than not enough! Big Grin
